He was also a vicious street fighter in and out the ring fueled by the anger of being robbed in the olympics, you can see that when he destroyed the olympic gold medallist steve mcrory who won the gold beating the guy who beat fenech in controversial fashion.

An interesting aside to this is that McCrory let Fenech wear his medal for the crowd after the bout.

    He was the real deal.

    Won titles is 3 divisions.

Should have been 4, but was robbed in the first Azumah Nelson fight.

Easily beat some good champions like Greg Richardson, Victor Callejas, Daniel Zaragoza, Samart Paya(can't spell his name).

When Samart went back to his home county, the President and a bunch of others ridiculed him for losing. Poor guy.

Anyway, Fenech was just incredibly physically strong and aggressive, with a great ability to smother his opponents. This included a keen sense of cutting off the ring.

He wasn't on network american tv much, for some reason. Dumb move by those guys as they kept showing the same recycled fighters over and over.

He seemed to age overnight against Azumah Nelson in their second fight, who was a little past his prime as well.

    After that, he was done.

Just a tremendous no questions asked Hall of Fame career.

    Great post

These guys saying he's overrated because of the Nelson rematch are disregarding his earier accomplishments, which were considerable.

At least he fought very stong competition from 122-130 lbs.

His competition at 118 wasn't great.

You've got guys in the Hall like Kostya Tzyu, Brian Mitchell and especially Ray Mancini, who didn't beat as good fighters as Fenech did, so his place is rock solid.

Fenech was a tremendously aggressive fighter, whose opponents could not stand the pace and strength. He was outright robbed in the first Nelson fight.

Fighters like Fenech can only last so long with what they ask of their body, which was the case with Jeff. Fenech appeared over confident going into the Nelson rematch, that and he body could no longer give what he asked of it.

I don't see how anyone would think he was overrated. The guy was a monster for 4 tp 5 years.

I agree. Jeff just willed himself to beat down his opponents, he was one tough hombre. In the first Nelson bout it was everything for Nelson to stay up towards the end and while he may have been ill the robbing Jeff of the decision this late in his career took something out of him too. None of us expected Jeff to be able to duplicate his drive in the rematch and part of it was due the bad decision in the first go.

The win over Samart Payakaroon doesn't register with a number of people, but Payakaroon was f'n good.

Yeah, he had kod Lupe Pintor for the title after Pintor upset Juan Meza who upset Jaime Garza.

After Fenech upset him, he was basically never heard from again.

Maybe his countrymen stoned him. I mean, the reaction he received back home was disgraceful, epecially, seeing what a great champion Fenech became. It was no descrace to lose to him.

A Fenech Gomez fight would have been vicious.
