I love Fenech (Have ever since he beat one of my fav's in Azumah and got robbed!!!! No way was that a draw!). and think he is on par H2H with Bazooka Gomez....

I am just not certain I rank him as the greates Aussie ever????
I like Dave Sands & Young griffo more and find Rose, Darcy, Famechon, Carruthers, and Peter jackson (along with Tszyu) to be on par or just above/below him.

Depends on how you want to go about it really.

Fenech's dominance and consistency was pretty good...to anarci's credit he is quite consistent when he ranks guys highly for this..along with how they look on film to him.

Rose's win over Harada and Sands' two wins over Olson are better than anything Jeff has on his ledger...though it must be said just about everyone considers the first Nelson fight a win for him.

At bantam his lack of defence would have been a problem against an Olivares or a Zarate and his lack of all round ability a problem against Jofre. I think Lionel Rose beats him too, I see that beig close and a similar fight to Rose-Harada.

Still his career was one of the most exciting of the 1980's. Quite a few of his fights were shown on national TV in the UK so we all got to see how good he was, fight fans in the US missed out a bit.

Never did agree with the Nelson draw, I thought Azumah won by a good 3-4 rounds, much more authority in his work when they were in the corner banging away.

I agree with you that Olivares,Zarate,Jofre would probably beat him as those guys were serious punchers and Fenech was kind of inexperienced and would catch some serious fire, but i said beats most of the bantams of the past.. I see where your getting at by comparing Harada and Fenech. but Harada was a little guy Fenech was much bigger and stronger than him, so this would be a much different fight for Rose....
Im not sure if know anyone that thought Nelson won the first fight:huh I thought Fenech won by at least a few points.

Hoiw do you think Fenech would do against Barrera at Bt,JF,FW and JL?

I love Azumah (maybe my fav non-Philly phighter ever), and I think he did a good job with his back to the ropes (where he found himself 90% of the fight), but don't see anyway he was effective enough to earn a draw let alone a win???? You might be the first I ever heard who scored this for Nelson, do you by any chance have your score card???

There is no valid argument for Azumah winning that fight...the very small minority of people that Ive encountered personally who felt the draw was justified or even Azumah won..have a version of the fight in their minds that just didnt happen in reality.

Not having a go happylora but Azumah's work was no more effective than Jeff's..His connect rate was really no better nor was it any more damaging..That one was an easy one to score, with little room for debate IMO.

I rate Jeff the 3rd best Aussie 126 pounder behind Griffo & Fammo. No higher than 3 at Bantam behind Carruthers & Rose, i think Paul Ferreri may out box him and Elly Bennett ko him.

But at 122 (a relatively young divvy) i have him no 2 all time world behind Gomez and above Pac.

Vicious fight, I think the win over Zarate is worth more than people here are admitting.

The Zarate fight was a farce. A 36 year old former bantam champ who'd retired 6 years, earlier fighting a beast of a 122 pounder?

Oh, and when Fenech thought he'd lost via the cut he was about to get stuck into Zarate after the fight. What a disgrace

As someone said earlier you are the first ive seen that had scored this fight for Nelson. Fenech's punches were mostly hitting Nelson on the arms and gloves I admit..but he still outfought and outmusculed Nelson. I only scored 2 rounds for Nelson, and those were the first two.

I never understood the two Nelson fights in the early 1990s. He gets a draw with Nelson and then Nelson stops him in Australia. I thought he would win the second fight. It was a little surprising.

I never thought the first Nelson-Fenech was an outright robbery. I always felt a lot of the rounds that were close and tough to score, with neither man being in total control.

Having said that, I thought Fenech's harder punching down the stretch should've given him the win.

Nelson claimed he was still suffering from a bout of malaria in the first fight and was healthy for the second. Take that as you will.

I remember that. After the first fight I didn't buy it, but after the second fight result I thought maybe he did have malaria.

Fenech appeared to have lost interest in boxing after the nelson draw.Fenech was acting crazy in the second fight.Watch the second fight closely and you will see fenech spitting on the floor and acting macho,he started to believe all the bull**** people were saying about how great he was.I am not saying Fenech was not an all time great,he was for sure.He believed all the **** people said and became very average near the end of his career.I would watch him in prep at newtown police boys club for his big fights and he is still the greatest fighter I have ever seen in real life.I also was there when Nelson was in prep for a few of his fights at The Glebe estate boxing gym.Nelson was great as well.
