Nice story....sux u missed out on the big cash there.....I bet you would have some great stories :good
Ash, Great stories and great friends. I never got big money but I am rich with wonderful memories. Choc sits and always listens when his dad and me talk about the old days. The characters of those days were unique. They were fantastic times.
its great having you on board jeff! hope you can share more and more stories as time goes by and tell us about what you think of the aussie fighters these days...
I bet he listens...Tony was one hell of a fighter as well...I know you guys were a few divisions apart sometimes more but did you guys spar much?
jeff was or are there any world class fighters that you reckon you would have given a solid hiding to?
I never sparred Tony in the gym as he was to big but we did roadwork together for a very long time. He used to pick me up to go to the fights or go and just hang out. We have always been close. We went to Young one night in 1983. Tony was doing an exhibition. When we got there no sparring partner so Tony said to me jump in there will pay you. It took plenty of convincing but I jumped in. I made Tony miss without any trouble in the first round so by the second I was feeling cocky. Tony landed a left jab followed by a half hearted right and I thought a bus hit me. Tony then went easy and I survived the 3 rounds. On the way home when I told him how much he hurt he replied your joking I hardly hit you. He was a legend who was my friend. I was blessed.
Whilst with Don King I had a continual run in with then WBC world jnr welter champion Leroy Haley. After several blow ups I finally got the chance to get in the ring with him. I was never any good sparring as i never went hard enough. But because of the dislike we both had for each other I attacked as soon as the bell went. We boxed 4 rounds and I belted him every round. The gym was packed as Leroy wasnt liked by anybody. So I had plenty of support. Tim Witherspoon was my second. He disliked Leroy more than me. Leroy was one guy I would have beaten without a problem.
Boxing today doesnt have the fun like it did in the 70s. Fighters were paid well and because there was fights nearly every night we all had money. Today its all about guys selling tables. Promoters dont care if you can fight or not as long as you can sell tables. 30 years ago the place was packed and fighters would fight anybody. We never picked our opponents. We just turned up and fought. Boxers today lack the toughness of the 70s. I dont blame guys fighting thais. I blame the promoters bringing them. There will always be good fighters in any era. But because we lack good teachers we dont have as many.
Billy Hussein just told me the guys who are on these forums are mad. I said yes I know I am one of them. Yes guys we have supporters.
