Yes Ash Darren Barker would be a good fight for Choc but at the end of the day it puts him no better off. Hes the number 1 WBA middleweight right now so I think hes better off looking at a title shot. Yes the waiting is almost over.
The return to 3x3 min rounds is a positive step, yet the ABAE here in england had a vote on headgear a while back and it has been kept unfortunately. Who is your next most prominent student? Can you say what weight for sure yet??
I'm glad to hear about that last bit :good I was talking comm title for 2 reasons.... 1. Considering you said it was everything....I wanted to see your thoughts on it for choc 2. Legacy for choc.....does the comm title mean anywhere near as much as it did 15 plus years ago?
I think like any title its not so much the champion but who did he beat to win it. In the 70s you had to fight somebody who was a world class fighter to win it. Then you were given a choice of maybe 2 or 3 guys that you had to defend against. By winning the title I came from nowhere to number 8 in the world by the WBC. I was 21 years old so it was an enormous thrill. In those days it was a really big thing for Australian boxers. Maybe today with so many regional titles out there the shine might of gone off it a bit.
Those of us old enough to remember can certainly vouch for status of Commonwealth Titles way back when. They were what all Aussie fighters aspired to, particularly if they managed to win national titles and were then looking to the next big step. Was interesting years ago that the late Bobby Dunne got a crack at Toro George's Commonwealth featherweight title without first winning a national title - a bit unusual in those days. Dunne of course took Toro's title of him too.
20a87 re headgear Interesting to hear that the use of headgear for amateurs was being reconsidered in England recently. Headgear from memory was introduced in 1984 at the LA olympics. Boxing was under mounting pressure to improve its safety image. The only people pushing this would be the blood and guts brigade hoping to see a few more KO's. The best move the AM's could make would be to dump computer scoring. Would stop a lot of the hit and run mentality that has developed. Obviously some people are making a **** load of money selling this gear around the world. Agree on the 3x 3 minute rounds. back to the thread, good to read your comments Flash.
Gday Jeff, love reading your stuff. I remember you winning the Lt welter title off local boy Billy Mullholland at Port leagues. Gave myself a refresher on your career in boxrec. My son-in-law fought & beat the same bloke 3 times, when they lined him up for a 4th stab at him, he said "Bugger this, I'm spending more time with this bloke than with your daughter" & he gave it away. You must have began seeing Brian Roberts etc. in your mirror mate. How hard is it to keep whacking away at repeat fights with the same bloke? You certainly had your share.
Great to hear your input Jeff. You are a true Auzzie Icon in the fight game. I met & spoke with Tony Snr a few weeks back at an amt fight night in Mackay. Still looks fit as a fiddle & a great bloke to speak to. I agree entirely fighters of today are not what they use to be.
Unfortunately, scoring in both pro & amateur bouts can be inconsistent as we all know. The amateurs are certainly good to watch, and when the scores are displayed, at least you know in advance if someone is getting screwed.
To answer the question on Png boxing has stopped there since the death of that young guy last year. I was at the fight and thought the kid had won. He collapsed in the corner after the decision and passed away a few days later. Having lost a son myself I knew how hard his parents would have taken it. The paper there said I was blaming people but it was complete lies. They have some good prospects there and I would love to go back up there if it starts up again.
I remember that. Sad news mate on the loss of your son and the png tragedy. As you say and I ws also told too... their is some talent on offer with those png kids. Jeff, do you still train to keep fit or even jump in for a few light rounds with a young kid or anything like that?
Rodin Yes fighting guys like brian was hard for a 16 year old on more than one occasion but you had to fight who they told you to. You couldnt pick and choose in those days. Brian was a outstanding boxer and a great person. It was guys like him Wally Carr Billy Mulholland and Billy Moeller that gave me the grounding to go on and win 100 fights. Fighting those guys while still learning was such a help for later on in my career.
Jet I still train people every day. I earn a good living personal training. I have put a lot of weight on but that comes with age. I have a one year old son who keeps me active. My wife is 24 so I cant say I am feeling old either.
