Surely one of the best fights of the past 30 years or so, up there with the likes of Gonzalez/Carbajal and the Marquez/Vasquez series.

Jeff Harding is an absolute iron man as he commits to one of the most dedicated and relentless body attacks you will ever see from a fighter that isn't Mexican or from one of the lower weight classes. Andries absorbs an unbelievable pounding to the body before finally, finally completely wilting late in the fight. Harding shows a head made out of cement, with a will and engine to match. A fighter that probably suffered from not fighting in the 15 round era.

But this one had a little bit of everything, and certainly qualifies as a great fight in my opinion.

A trilogy you really don't hear much about. Why's that?

Remember this fight well the week.I started work. Andres was saying in the British press that he would tame Tyson! Dennis was tough but that might be pushing it!.great fight but I was gutted Dennis lost .Rematch was brilliant too with Dennis getting revenge in Australia. Both guys hard as they come and forgotten by all but the hard core fans.

Your last lines echo true, I wonder how many current fans of the sport will ever bother watching someone now buried so deeply in the past when they haven't made the bother already? It's a shame.

Weirdly enough, I watched their first fight for the very first time the other day. Two tough men.

Thanks for posting this Russell. I remember watching it back in the day and it is one of those gems that sadly lay forgotten.

No problem at all! I wouldn't be much of a fan of the sport if I didn't share obscure gems like this one for the rest of the boxing community to get to appreciate.

Both these guys were real marvels, I especially fixate on Harding. What an odd combination of size, chin, while still having a devastating body attack... it's a shame he spent relatively so little time in the game before retiring.

Discovered this one a few years back during one of the old "underrated fights" threads. Insane amount of leather thrown (and landed) in that one.

All three of their fights were good action packed bouts. Not much sweet science but pretty entertaining.

N.B - Each fight of their trilogy was won by the underdog.

What order would you rank them in, quality wise, Stevie?

I remember Andries saying he was going to beat tyson, but I think that was prior to the hearns loss. That one moderated expectations for the hackney rock a little!

I remember when this happened, it was a big deal in my country obviously. It was instantly noted as one of the great battles.

I watched this recently while I was trying to make a list of the best light heavyweight fights. It makes everyone's lists right at the top, but just like the Bob Foster vs Chris Finnigan bout I felt like it was missing something. The action is there but I don't know, I felt like it was missing heart or something. I might watch the other two fights in the trilogy, but I still feel like it's missing something that all the Matthew Saad Muhaammad fights had, or Moore vs Durelle had. I even prefer Merqui Sosa vs Prince Charles Williams first fight to this one.

Hard to call with that one,Russell. Each of the three was great to watch with advantage seesawing constantly. My fondest one was the second. Denis regaining the title and winning it for a third time. Andries may have had his limitations but he sure made the most of them.
