Jeff Lacy should wear trunks with 'Spider Rico' written on them, unless Roy Jones beat him to it. then it would be tacky.

That's a good interview. I'm very surprised at how cerebral he is.
Seems like a nice guy and I hope for good things for him in his career and life, though another line of work would be preferable at this stage.

    That interview is powerful stuff.

It really brings it home to you that we're just a bunch of internet guys who pass judgement on people who dedicate their lives to a sport and who suffer so that they can make it in their craft.

Im not one of these guys that calls anyone a bum, but seeing interviews like this really drives home the message that Im just some guy with a ****ing internet connection that quite often passes judgements on fighters and questions their ability.

Ill probably think a little more about that stuff after seeing this interview

I mean, WTF are any of us to look down on any of these guys really?

P.S. I don't know why but I kind of expected Lacy to be punchy or even a bit thuggish in the way he speaks.

Dudes really eloquent in the way he portrays himself.

if the interview is going to make me sappy i'll skip it. mainly it's the Brits dogging Lacy anyway, in a circle jerk around Calzaghe's statue in one of their mum's basement.

Not sappy, but it does bring home the hypocrisy of some guys on foruns calling guys like this a "bum" and a has been.

Just because his ring IQ was low doesn't mean he's dumb, not sure why people expected that. Plenty of brilliant tacticians are complete idiots when placed in any context besides a prizefight. The one has no automatic correlation with the other.

It's hard to imagine Winky being good friends (and he and Lacy are that, more than just occasional sparring partners) with someone he viewed as intellectually feeble. He doesn't seem one to suffer fools gladly.

I was just pointing out that they used to spar each other (and also have been friends for a long time), which might explain why he was so high on him, although there were plenty of others who were too, including other top pros or people involved in the sport who'd either trained or spent time in the same gym or sparred with him. As for how Lacy would fare against Winky in a real fight? Um.. you're probably right.

It goes both ways. Like I said, he wasn't as good as advertised but contrary to what many will try and have us believe he was a good fighter prior to getting his soul sucked out of him by Calzaghe and suffering that horrible rotator cuff injury. I think both that coupled with the torrent of abuse he has been subjected since then have combined to impact his downfall.

Boxing fans are some of the worst group of fans of any sport, IMO. I mess about and say sh*t when I'm in joke mode but I do genuinely respect fighters for what they do, from those on the lowest rung of the ladder to those right at the top. I dislike certain fighters, a few strongly, but no man who climbs between the ropes to earn their living is a coward or a bum.

Fair enough, I incorrectly interpreted that as you suggesting he must have been pretty good to regularly spar with Winky. (who, while 1-2 weight divisions lower, was a p4p elite for a time)

You're right, though, Ron probably was just getting his boy's back with all his public crowing about him. Just seemed odd that he would espouse Lacy as the total package when so much was missing and when he himself was on such a different level as a technician.

Yeah, which is why I thought "B+" (pre-Joe) was appropriate, and I stand by that. :good

Good interview by Lacey. Calslappy just happened to catch him on an off night with a messed up shoulder and still experiencing jet lag.

I listened to another Lacy interview a while back, it was a fairly recent one maybe a year old or so, which was quite depressing. I can't remember exactly what he said now (it was quite long) but he did still sound pretty messed up about the Calzaghe loss and the treatment he's been subjected since his career spiraled downwards. He said that prior to that fight he was on top of the world and that everyone wanted to know him. But after that fight his phone stopped ringing and many of the people he thought were friends upped and disappeared. You could clearly still hear the hurt in his voice as he elaborated on all of that. He sounded like a broken man. I really do genuinely feel for the guy.
