Lacy was a fighter that had the build that looked like a super middleweight Mike Tyson. He was always flawed as a boxer but he was someone I thought would end up being too strong for everyone else at 168. Calzaghe destroyed him physically/mentally and he will never be the same. He just looks horrible now.

How many punches did Calzaghe connect on Lacy?

I've seen the Sheika fight. Sheika also fought tooth and nail with Glen Johnson, and was a good contender and then gatekeeper type. People viewed it as growing pains since Lacy was still an inexperienced fighter at the time, and nobody bothered to even mention it leading into the Calzaghe-Lacy fight, where 3/4 of people picked Lacy.

One still cannot ignore that Lacy's gone from being successful against lower level beltholder material to struggling against top 30 guys, and while the shoulder set him back some, his lack of will comes directly from the Calzaghe fight and the subsequent backlash he got from it. There were alot of fans, not just casual but other fighters and famous people, that threw him aside like yesterday's news after that fight. One of the reasons is that a black, hyped US champion cannot get schooled like that by a European fighter. A controversial decision, a close fight, that's one thing...but to get absolutely dominated like that lost him alot of support and turned him from the next Tyson to a punch line overnight. It doesn't sound fair, but I'm just saying it like I saw at the time. The beating and the way people turned on Lacy jaded him on the sport and changed his entire way of thinking. The shoulder was a little icing on a 3 tier cake that'd already been built by that.

The Calzaghe fight coupled with the the shoulder injury have more or less ruined him. I don't know which did worse for his career, but if you want to make it simple we'll say that Calzaghe ****ed him mentally and the injury ****ed him physically. The perfect double whammy.

He's destroyed both mentally AND physically. It doesn't take much to hurt him these days which is a clear sign of a shop worn fighter. He's done for. Time for him to pack his bags and move on.

The Calzaghe fight finished him off.

But he at least showed toughness and stamina against Sheika and his other pre-Calzaghe fights, and even in his loss to Calzaghe. That's gone now.

No matter what you thought of Lacy before the Calzaghe fight, he's a far cry from the same fighter regardless. A Lacy with his chin and stamina may be just average, but a Lacy without them is absolutely nothing.

Lacy looked shot to me in his fight just before Taylor (on ESPN, I forget who the opponent was). Before that, I thought he might have a good shot at beating Taylor. But after that fight, I knew he was too far gone. I was glad when he retired and felt bad when he came back. I was surprised he even lasted the distance and gave what good a fight as he did.

It has nothing to do with who he lost to, it's his form (or lack thereof).

I don't think it's that he's lost faith in his power, it's that he's worried about his chin.

I got the impression right from the first round against Taylor, when he tried to "box" him from the outside. He knows his chin is gone now, and he's fighting under that handicap. Now he has to worry about getting hit with the kinds of punches he used to just walk through before.

I don't know if you saw his fight just before Taylor, but in that one he showed a very shaky chin. That's the first time I've ever seen Lacy show a suspect chin. Before that his chin was one of his best assets.

Even Lacy himself knew his chin was gone, and that's why he retired. It's unfortunate that he came back.

Personally, I think it was an accomplishment just that he lasted the distance.

Lacy's opponent for that fight was Epifanio Mendoza. Great puncher, but obviously not a great ring technician and Lacy was bounced all over the ring in that fight.

Personally I thought that fight could have gone to Mendoza or possibly a draw, but no way Lacy won that fight in my book.

Now's the perfect time for a random Beibut Shumenov shout out. Dude beat that same Epifanio Mendoza clearly in just his 7th fight over 10 rounds earlier this month.
