that fight shouldnt have really gone past the 8th. Lacy has a hell of a chin, because while Calzaghe may have average power, he still was landing tons of power shots, and that combined with the extent of the beating would have forced most guys to take knee at the very least. That fight completely ruined Lacy, it was basically a 36 minute assault with him being the heavybag for Calzaghe. You dont get your body beaten to a ****ing pulp like he did and then come back the same.
Lots of pro Golfers, tennis players, etc etc have undergone RC surgery with no after effects.I think the hype and the realisation that he was no more than an average Joe (no pun intended) ruined his self belief which ultimately ruined him as a fighter.Calzaghe did a number on him,and even those who wanted to see him taught a lesson must have felt for him in the later rounds of that fight.I think he showed great heart and character to last the distance, although it was obvious the fight should have been stopped long before the 12th. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Rr-TGQAiFE
Doesn't matter. Lacy has the firepower to end it with one punch. Nobody can possibly know that wouldn't happen. Hindsight is always 20/20.
The fight shouldn't of gone the distance, seeing Joe land 5 fast punches duck one of Lacy's then throw another 5 punches in a matter of seconds for most of the fight was hardly competative.
nice Kind of hard to punch when someone can throw half a dozen shots for each punch you throw, and he's just going to work on you. I don't think Joe was looking for anything more than a UD or maybe TKO.
To be fair, his corner should have stopped it after the 10th round IMO, or even sooner. You know he wasn't going to quit. His corner and/or the ref should have saved Lacy from his own heart. I still remember the post fight interview - Lacy was slurring bad. He didn't sound too healthy.
Gotta agree with you 100% here. He had already been cut over both eyes by that point in time and it was pretty clear there was nothing to gain but a worse beating by continuing on. I put that squarely on his corner, as Lacy was still throwing just enough for the ref not to call it and as you said, you can't really ask the fighter to make the call in that situation. Where's Buddy McGirt when you need him? :!:
