It's one of the few perks you get in journalism (and why so many of them bugger off into communications and marketing). Bad pay for a long, long time, but amazing access to the people in the public eye. I actually admire Powell for being such a grumpy old *******. He really does write whatever is on his mind, regardless of how much sense it makes, what it says, if it's true, etc.
There's a few in the national press who like their jolly to Vegas to cover big fights but are no where to be seen for fights like McDonnell on Saturday. Ollie Holt of the Mirror is the first one that springs to mind.
