Well, get him in Canastota, and you'll have your trophy. (Since he entered the Ring HOF in 1969, maybe this'll give him the same edge Root and Gully enjoyed this year.)
Great Stuff, Jersey Jones kept Smiths name alive with several excellent feature articles in Ring Magazine detailing his masterful beating of young Tommy Laughran. Ever see them?
I've seen only one article about the Smith-Loughran fights. Are there several?? Which issue? Do you have them scanned? Sounds great
Surf, read your article, and it was a doozy.Great writing about this little known Jeff Smith , who might have beaten 90% of the middleweights in history. Little doubt of that in my mind....He fought and whipped most everybody he faced, doing it the hard way. In his opponents home town. He fought everyone and everybody ,spotting many opponents 12 pounds or more... His nemesis was [ who else], Harry Greb, who whipped Smith 6 or 7 times. That alone should put him in the Hall Of Fame ! After one tough defeat by Greb in Yougstown, Ohio The Telegram printed this." Greb without a doubt is the greatest FREAK of the boxing game, past or present. Greb has a style all his own. He hits from ANY and EVERY angle, and off balance, and invariably hits his mark "...But Jeff vSmith Fought Greb hard seven times, along with so many, many great fighters...Kudos to you S....
My only regret is that I couldn't find that Tunney quote where he called Jeff the smartest fighter he ever faced. That would have gone nice alongside the Greb and McTigue quotes.
