This is my problem with the Bible - the old "What God MEANT to say was..."

Figurative language, whatever - it's a fairy tale. Vast swathes of it are unreliable, contradicted by established historical record and evidence of evolution!

Do I believe there is some higher power? Yes - although not a God or state of conciousness the way we experience it. The Universe came from something. But to read a book of fables, clearly designed as dictums on how you should live your life, tied to a morality which said it was ok to **** your teenage wife, stone people if you disagreed with them, and that not believing in God was a punishable offence rings a little hollow to me.

Can religion be a good force in people's lives? Yes, but when you see people out bombing abortion clinics and attacking gays, then you have to consider that somewhere "morality" got a bit misconstrued.

For the record, my best friend's father was a minister. Said friend is very religious. It's not something I judge people on or seek to bring up, but religion is not the basis of morality.

I tend to agree with allot of what you said. Religion has been tarnished by man, and the words of Jesus were mis contrued and used to do wrong from the moment he spoke them. All men are fallible.

But it doesn't change my own personal beleif and the faith I have. I have to look beyond the wrongs of man.

everything in the bible could well be bull**** mate. but i know of my personal relationship with God without it I do not know where I would be in life but I do not think I would have the happiness I have right now. its the best thing in my life.

    Good post DFT.

As I say, my parents were brought up religious and my Mum is still very spiritual. I shoot her down when she's talking **** though, but it's okay 'cause she's my Mum. I told her straight up 'when you die you'll go to the same place as Nan...a worms digestive system' she wasn't happy but I told her to go **** herself and she doesn't bring up 'God' anymore around me

As I say, wouldn't be rude to anyone else, but my own Mum? That's cool IMO.

As for anyone that knocks on my door (Jehovahs, Mormons, Catholics, Protestants WHATEVER) they get the full interrogation until they leave, embarrassed and enlightened with any luck.

I think what hes saying is that a lot of the bible seems to be "well yes, that is definately true" then "oh no, that has to be seen in context, its not meant like that".

A lot of people read through it, and pick out parts that correllate with their already held beliefs

I understand where Dftaylor comes from, I think in the first instance (Old Testament) God was young and demanding and had extremely high standards and quite quickly saw that human's can't do as he says IMO he was dealing with very simple people. He would try and try but it wouldn't work but in the end through his wisdom and sent his son as a sacrificial lamb to bring salvation but also for him to understand the problems we have has human beings.

Not everyone can believe or want to and no doubt Satan's worked among the world. When sat down today and heard how God touched my pastor's life when he was a young man fighting the Mugabe regime it re-affirmed my faith.

I think the problem with many christian and other faiths is parents demanding there kids to the lord when they should allow them to see the truth for themselves. Many try force it and as we know you can lead a horse to water but can't make it drink it.

All in all the Bible is down to interpretation, I've felt the lord bless me and situations in life haven't been coincidence. Anyways my last post but nice to see a healthy debate.

She's liberal and not uptight at all. No malice in that.

Maybe contradict was the wrong word. Make it up as you go along whatever criticism is thrown at you might be better.

Again 'i must be clever because my girlfriend is' sums you up.

Seems me sticking up for you in this thread has gone out the window, sorry Rob.
