Is it worth reading the last 300 posts or is it just about gay marriage legislation?

if you love someone you will look beyond looks. in the end we all end up as toads. your wife will probably look like **** but so will you and you were never as good with women as you seem to remember.

Yeah I've been there, with the 9-5 thing and hated it. I think it's one of the greatest tragedies. As you say, one life, and most of our time is spent working, commuting to and from work, getting dressed for work, and stressing about going into work. That's why I agree with Jeff Thomas's post on facebook, but then again, am I just being unrealistic and romantic to think everyone can follow their dreams and do what they enjoy?

I think the really religious people are wasting away in fear. For them it's even worse. What I also mean by superficial differences is that they are grateful to god for what they have. I am grateful also. Not to god, because I don't know if god exists or why I'm here. Is it just luck? Something I did in a past life? All I know is I'm just grateful I'm out here, as opposed to being in prison or having to grow up in a country without alcohol and strip clubs. I'm still grateful for what I have, so I have the exact same mindset as them, but they don't see it. This is my view anyway, that it's all in the head.

My family is the type that is very, very easily persuaded by the way. They need to learn to think for themselves.

But this argument is based on an antiquated, (at least for all western nations), period of human history. It is not necessarily the case anymore. History has evolved. It would be perfectly possible for a new genetic disposition of postnatal nonchalance to gain a foothold in the gene pool as a corollary of the social welfare now prevalent in western nations. Who's to say that it hasn't already? All this need to protect, need to provide necessity has disappeared. The 21st century mantra should be: go forth man and populate; no nine month production cap for you!

And all this sentimental talk of love; gimme a break. You ask someone to define love and they immediately come up with a myriad of independent emotions, instincts, urges that just happen to converge for a moment. And you allocate an independent existence to that chimera?!:patsch Folk psychology at its best!

I've enjoyed it too and very glad it moved into a genuine discussion rather than just ripping you.

Interesting stuff and I respect everyone in this thread, apart from rampant.

Are you purposefully ignoring my posts? Because I've already written this twice now....

"Read up on vasopressin and oxytocin and the respective neural receptors within the brain. There are evolutionary reasons and advantages to pair bonding and love. Just as there are for the unconditional love that most functioning parents feel for their children.

Once initial infatuation dies down, the length of the receptors for these key chemicals is likely to mean you are inclined to long term bonding or not and then other factors such as mututal respect and shared interests will determine whether it is a lasting "love".

It sure as hell is not anything to do with a God or Gods, irrespective of whether such deities exist or not. We can already make animals that usually do not pair bond "settle down" and vice versa simply by messing with their brains exposure to those two hormones."
