Yes this happened, Corbett's brother actually knocked him down.Jackson was drunk.

Jackson was also knocked down by Tom Lees in a street brawl whilst he was in the UK, he was drunk then too. The only serious opponent Jackson had after the Slavin fight is the one always mentioned in conjunction with his name . John Barleycorn.

this guy pretty much got it right, and it is hard to believe that this wasnt how the real smart insiders saw things, despite what was reported in the papers.

Here is a really good blow for blow report of the Jackson jeffries fight. Peter sounds like the definite fan favourite. If you read the first round, you do have to wonder whether or not this might have been what was in store for Jeffries in a prime for prime fight. You also wonder how, at this point a Jackson Corbett fight would have went. Hard to believe that they didnt have a rematch. Looking at the aging of the fighters, i would have thought Corbett must have been the favourite. In hindsight, i bet he wishes he fought Jackson instead of Fitzsimmons.

After beating Slavin, Jackson contented himself with occasional exhibitions , he did not actively pursue any fights, that is why there is a six year gap between fights.
In training for Jeffries ,Jackson was punched out by his trainer Corrigan, this was related by Hype Igoe.

this is quite a bit before the Jeffries fight, but although inactive it seems that the word was that Peter did have one or two fights left him in. It is a good little article written by Jimmy Carroll, well worth a read to give insight on what some of the thinking was during this time.

here is an interesting account of Parson's speech at the last show of uncle toms cabin.

And here is an article which shows how bad things really were for coloured's back in the day. I must say, i am a little disappointed to read that sharkey drew the coloured line against Jackson.

I think this might have been an interesting one. I am pretty sure that Peter would have beaten Charlie Mitchell too.
(by the way, not that i am disagreeing with anything you have said McVey).

here is a really good article by Jackson though admittedly he seems desperate to get a big money fight. He considers Jeffries the only fighter to have beaten him. Also interesting that he wanted the winner of Corbett mcCoy.

Jackson wanted to fight Choynski , when this could not be arranged he was pushed into a fight with Maher ,this fell through and he was offered Jeffries ,whom he did not want to fight ,but it was the only option, and he was destitute. After being stoppedJackson went to a saloon, and got drunk and stayed drunk for quite awhile.

To be fair, that isnt too different to what he did for the previous 6 years!

By the way, when did the black prince nickname originate for peter. I have never seen him referred by this nickname in any articles. The only nickname i have seen him use was that of Professor Peter Jackson, which he was given in his early Australian days, but seems to have been lost when he left Australia for the usa.
