Do you place Johnson significantly differently from me relative to his era?

If as I suspect not, then you must give Hart some credit for beating him.

Good info which has confirmed what I wrote. McVey became disenchanted with the game after being taken apart by Johnson and losing to Martin, but in 1903 , when he challenged Jeffries , he had only lost to Johnson , and had beaten two contenders in Martin and Russell by ko and kod the dangerous Carter. BTW. Johnson dropped Martin 5 times in their 20rd dec fight.

It's the credit we give to the era wherein we differ.

Yes, there was some talk about a possible world heavyweight title bout between Jim Jeffries, the champion, and Sam McVey at the time the latter fought Jack Johnson for a second time, which Johnson won handily. In fact, Johnson won all three of his bouts with McVey easily. While reading reports of all three, I got the impression that McVey took quite a beating each time. When the third bout was scheduled to take place in San Francisco, Los Angeles boxing fans couldn't believe it, feeling that Johnson proved conclusively that he had McVey's number when fighting him the first two times in Los Angeles. After the second bout between Johnson and McVey, there was some talk about Johnson being a viable opponent for Jeffries.

There was more than”some talk of McVea being a viable opponent for Jeffries”.

Many papers talked about him as the outstanding contender for Jeffries title, before he first met Johnson.

He continued to be advanced as a top contender over Johnson, even after Johnson had beaten him.

He has to be taken seriously at this point!

Jeffries wouldn't go near Johnson or McVey.
Look at who he fought how big they were, and at what stage of their respective careers they were. How long it took him to give old, retired champs rematches . Absorb how much grief he incurred subduing them. Then make your evaluation as to where he stands in the pantheon of heavyweight champions.:deal

In Los Angeles, there may have been talk about Jim Jeffries defending his world heavyweight title against Jack Johnson or Sam McVey, but the City of the Angels had a population of about one hundred thousand people in 1900 and an estimated population of 200,000 in 1905. Although Los Angeles was becoming a major boxing venue very quickly at the time, it was essentially a backwater place. Outside of the relatively small city of Los Angeles, I doubt if there was much talk about Jeffries defending his title in a bout with Johnson and McVey before 1905.

I wasn't trying to be a booster for Jim Jeffries on this thread. In fact, I feel that Jack Johnson should have been considered as a viable contender for the world heavyweight title as early 1903. I also feel that Johnson should have remained a viable contender even after his loss to Marvin Hart because the decision in the bout was highly disputed. It should also be pointed out that Johnson was more active as a fighter than many other top heavyweights of his day, which meant that he was more likely to lose a bout or two within a certain span of time. Also consider the fact that Johnson piled up a far more impressive record than Hart before they fought. Johnson certainly had a far better claim to fight for the vacant world heavyweight title than Jack Root in 1905.
