Johnson's beating of Jeffries? Was Jeffries durability still there, but it was simply a case of Johnson uppercutting him to death over the course of the 45 minute fight? Is it one of the all time worse beatings given in a boxing fight? Jeffries looked like he was near dead at the end of it, and some of Johnson's uppercut snap Jim's head back ala Vitali vs. Lennox. Thoughts?
From what I understand, Johnson beat Jeffries down systematically over time. I think Jeffries was falling at the end because his strength was totally sapped from the cumulative effect of the beating, and not because he couldn't absorb Johnson's shots. Johnson could punch but a prime Jeffries at least would have been able to absorb the blows. Jeffries was known for being exceptionally rugged.
Yeah, I agree. I think it was a combination of the heat, a 15 round beating, exhaustion, and probably had a lot to do with Jeffries being a bit drained from losing something like a 100 pounds. He went down in the end fro being hit multiple times in the clinch, basically.
Jeffries was way too old and out of shape to attempt a comeback against Johnson. He should have stayed retired.
Too old? He was only 37, wasn't he? Only had a little over a dozen fights. Lot more worn fighters out there.
Inactivity kills a fighter more than age. Not having a real fight since Aug 1904, balooning up to well over 300 pounds, then taking on a prime world champ in 1st fight back in Jul 1910, after 6 years, and still lasting 15 rounds...not bad under the circumstances. But it was probably idiotic to try.
Jones Jr was bragging a few days ago on how he fought the "Best" Tito there ever was because Tito had a 2 year lay off and thus the break did Tito some good. I could not belive what Jones was saying lol.
