After koing Fitz for the title ,Jim Jeffries proposed a benefit for the fallen champion with himself boxing an exhibition in it. A kind, and generous offer that Fitz appreciated. See link below. http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=F40F10FA3F5414728DDDA80994DE405B8985F0D3
@mcvey "Love of truth shows itself in this, that a man knows how to find and value the good in everything." JOHANN WOLFGANG VON GOETHE :good
Jeffries was a good friend to Fitzsimmons and Sharkey when they were in reduced circumstances. Fitz hit the bottle quite a bit as he aged, and Jeffries helped him out with $$$ on several occasions. After Jeffries wife died ,he invited Sharkey to come and live with him. Jeffries was a man of few words, but his actions towards those two when they were down spoke volumes.
mcvey thanks for posting, never read article that before. Jefferies could be called a good role model for some present day fighters, he entered every bout in excellent shape, had the fighting heart of a lion and was a decent guy. The one area which should not followed was his return to the ring against Johnson, but he was mightily pressured to do so as we know and was rewarded well financially.
