Yeah but he would never get those shots, not while Johnson was champ. And Johnson is the last guy you could count on pulling a Lennox Lewis. Way too cautious.

If Langford or Jeannette had beaten Burns, I wonder how much of a hurry they would have been in to defend against Johnson?:think

Yeah. Long, dull, punishing fights that will make you look like a moron even if you could win (which you're not)? Suuure bring 'im on. Man 30 grand must've been a world of cash back than.

    A couple of points:

Are there mitigating circumstances for Johnson's behaviour?

Personally I believe that there are. Let us not forget that the persecution of him lead to severe clinical depression, suicide attempts, and ultimately institutionalisation. This would be treated as a mitigating factor in a courtroom today.

Could Langford ever have beaten Johnson?

I think that you might be able to identify a time slot where he could have done. People underestimate Johnsons decline after the Jeffries fight, both athletically and psychologically. We should keep an open mind that Langford might have been able to capitalise on this.

Could Johnson ever have been induced to fight Langford?

I think it is possible that he might have been willing to, for the right amount of money, at a time when he was looking to cash out. He was seriously looking at getting out of the game before he was charged under the Mann act, which would have meant that he could afford the eventuality of losing financially.

Langford could have beaten the version of Johnson that beat Moran. The problem for Langford would have been that Johnson would have turned up in a lot better shape if he were facing Langford, and let's not forget Langford was sometimes as fat as a barrel in fights himself.

I was referring to his testicles ie his courage, but yes he would wrap his pork dagger in gauze to confirm all the whiteman fears. I'ts getting so you can't type jack **** now without being censored, rather ridiculous.

Langford from 1908-1912 could have beaten any version of Johnson.

If Johnson could not finish a 156 pound 20 year old Sam Langford, how is he going to do better with a mature 175-185 pound Langford?

Judging by the effects of Johnson chin when it was hit flush, Langford could win via KO, or UD by out working Johnson. Sam was very strong, and had leverage. Johnson's usual grab, hug then foul tactics would not work well here.

Chewing up the Hollywood left agenda you are. This is why I feel Unforgivable Blackness is the best book on Johnson. It shows the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Never have I seen a fighter get so much credit for beating a guy that had been retired for 6 years. Johnson for some reason receives a pass for this fight. The win was meaningless.
