You are not far wrong but the men who fought for the World title prior to Munroe were Sullivan, Corbett, Mitchell, Fitz, Maher, Jeffries, Sharkey and Ruhlin, 1889-1904. Meant more then.
Goddard, Jackson, Denver Smith, Slavin, Choynski, McCoy, Armstrong, Childs, Martin had not fought for the title. Even Klondike, Kennedy, O'Donnell, Dunkhorst, etc were better men than Munroe.

Never thought about it that way.

To be fair though, Sullivan had let some less than qualified contenders fight for his title and people had not questioned it because of his level of activity. No champion had shown the same sort of activity as Jeffries since Sullivan.

Looking at the title reigns of Corbett and Fitzsimmons you can see why praise was acorded to Jeffries.

Montana Jack Sullivan? He was a middleweight.
Haye would crucify Munroe, are you serious?
Valuev would box Munroe's ears off.

Haye is 6'3'' 226lbs, ripped and a very hard puncher, in his prime.

Barrett was 6'3'' 226lbs had won last 3 fights by ko , 2 that year.
Valuev was 7' 316lbs reigning WBA Champ won 50 lost 2
Ruiz was 6'2'' multiple WBA Champ, ex WBC champ.

Sullivan was a middle weight with
    a total 14 fight record won 6 lost 3
Sharkey was a shot 5' 8'' fighter who had been retired for 2 years .
Maher was an incurable alcoholic who had lost 3 of his last fights by ko inside 2 rds, only winning the other on a dq against probably the most inept man who ever climbed into a ring ,Joe Grim .
Stop with this, it is getting embarrassing.

Munroe was nothing, dress it up how you want that is my opinion of him.

By these standards, you are definitely right.

But, if Munroe wasnt picked, who was? No one really had a standout record that said pick me as challenger. Some may have been slightly better to some people, but noone really stood out, did they?

Even if Johnson was picked, and i really think that he was being lined up for the defence after Munroe, his selection could have been criticised still based on the choynski loss or even the Griffin Loss or draws which were all less than 3 years earlier. Choynski would have been a logical challenger at some point in time, but he himself had too many bad results to capitalise on an excellent position (having earlier technically drawn with Jeffries). Among others the two 1st round KOs to Kid Carter were unforgiveable (what is the deal with those was it a sylistic thing, or did the kid normally wear cuffs or what?). Looking at the Kid's record, i dont even think those two wins over choynski made him even slightly a chance of getting a title shot.

Carter was a middleweight with massive hitting power but if I remember correctly led a very poor lifestyle(for fighting!).

Well he might have seemed like nothing after Jeffries dismantled him, but there were plenty of people in the know who actually tipped Munroe, some with their hard earned money. It seems that a Munroe win, might have been absolutely nothing like a Douglas win over Tyson. Or even anyone today over Wlad.
