Jeffries talked seriously about a rematch with Johnson?

    Pretty mad.

Jim Jeffries:"I may fight Johnson again and within six months. There are reasons why I should want a return fight and I am considering them carefully. I may be prepared to make a definite statement very soon.

Until today I have had no desire to talk of my plans for the future. But I would be foolish to deny that I have not considered another meeting with Johnson or to deny that I would like a chance to redeem myself.

I may fight again. I will admit I have discussed another fight with Berger and my brother Jack. Whilst another fight is more of a possibility than a probability you can say I am thinking hard and may have something to say very soon."

Sam Berger: "Jeffries and I agree that had he entered the ring three months earlier...he would have had a better chance to win. The long training grind and the mental strain proved to much for him. Personally, I can't admit Johnson's superiority. There is only one way to justify my opinion. Another fight."

Jim Jeffries: "Every man makes mistakes and I know I made mine in working to long and to hard as Sam has just said. No-one knows the mental strain of the last three months better than me. I never knew what worry was before."

Tex Rickard: "I am not surprised. Everyone in touch with actual conditions in Reno knows that Jeffries did not fight the fight his training stunts showed him capable of a few days earlier. I think another fight between Jeffries and Johnson would be nearly as big a draw as the first, and I don't think for a moment it would necessarily be a walkaway."

    Seattle Star, July 09 1910.

Bit mad this isn't it? Is it speaking of a huge heart and self belief or has this now reached the level of self delusion? Is it just a manuevere? Do you feel like maybe Jeffries ego is being salved? Or does it add fuel to the fire for the case for a nervous breakdown or even the doping tale, which was briefly entertained in the press of the time (and presumably which Jeffries had read).

    Any thoughts? Any knowledge?

On reflection , having stated immediately after the fight , that Johnson beat him fair and square. Jeffries and his brother, both said he was beaten by" drugged tea." No sorer loser than Jeffries has left the ring.

Fair enough, but not really relevant (let's hope you have it out of your system early ;)).

Never heard of this. Can´t be true either since as we all know, thanks to PowerPuncher, that Jeffries was a coward. If there is something to it, I guess it was all about money. I think everybody knew that that Jeffries would never beat Johnson. Even Jeff did. But there would have been huge money in a rematch. There were still enough people buying, or wanted to buy, in the "unbeatable Jeff" myth and like seen above people worked on a good way to discount the weight of the loss. It must be money, I doubt Jeff, Rickard and Co would have fooled themselves by thinking Jeff would be able to beat Johnson after the first fight.

hhhmmm I wonder who would have won that one hhhmmmm

All I see is the usual generic post fight excuses from a challenger that was dominated by his opponent. It's obvious to anyone that Johnson would have kicked the **** out of him again in rematch.

Did Wladdy sack his cornerman for putting vaseline on him or not? Did he claim he'd been drugged or not?

Once Jeffries had declared he would fight Johnson, he went on two exhibition tours, and made an absolute fortune.
Perhaps his dipping his toe in the water, with regards to a rematch ,was a ploy to keep his name before the public?
After Jeffries was humiliated by Johnson ,the very people that had cheered him to the echo, came down on him like a ton of bricks, declaring he had let them down. He did his best and took a real hiding in the process. I cannot believe he really thought he would do any better in a rematch I think that Johnson would have come out roaring the second time and finished him quick, he had allready proved his point with a prolonged public torture of the white Champion.

Yep, it´s Brewster. Wlad had very unusual bloodsugar levels, or so he claims, after the fight and even was in hospital. The samples vanished though. There are people who claim he was drugged. Can´t remember if Wlad did so himself. If he does I would give it some weight since it would be quite out of character for him.

-Klitschko claimed he was drugged but never blamed Brewster, hinting that it was Don King. I believe it was actually Steward who told the "vasoline" story.

-But really this is about Power Puncher calling me racist for trolling Jones Jr. fans. Guy has issues. I troll everybody.

When did I call you racist, care to post a link or just throwing muck? However you've called me a racist for daring to question your hero

Wlad sacked his cornerman for putting vaseline on him, that much is fact. If that isn't a sore loser I'm not sure what is, maybe Hagler's worse
