And why is Norton a level above him? Because he beat Ali. A massive shock, the under dog defeat s a all time great. Unbelievable.. But it happened. And yet if Norton never faced Muhammad you'd laugh at his chances. Would you have ever picked schmeling over Louis if they'd never met?. Honestly? I'm not even saying that Chuvalo beats Jeff but your making out that he's not a hope in hell. Some times styles make fight s. Perhaps he had the perfect style to beat Jeff?
So now to ask the awkward question. what were their rankings when Chuvalo fought them? If they were ranked outside the top ten, then they were emphatically not better than the opposition that Jeffries fought! No, but if it had been Ezzard Charles, it would be a completely different matter. It would depend what that blown up middleweight had done in the heavyweight division. He was head and shoulders above anybody that Chuvalo ever beat.
So Jeffries has like 21? Pro fights doesnt seem like he beat any greats in there prime? Retires gets in great condition yet doesnt even win 1 single minute against Johnson yet Chuvalo is given no chance by some people??? Doesnt make sense to me
The difference between these two is Corbett and Fitz would have beat Chuvalo twice each unlike Jeffries...
More awkward question.. had there been rankings when Jeffries fought Corbett (both times) what would have been Corbett's ranking. In 1900, he hadn't won a fight in 6 years. In 1903, he was on his last leg and won a legit fight in 9 years. Yet, Corbett goes down as one of Jeffries greatest pelts.
If there had been rankings in Jeffries day, he would unquestionably have fought a significant number of ranked opponents. I do not know whether Corbett would have been ranked, but it would not have been a game changer either way. Now back to my original question.
If this doesn't make sense to you, then you have not got your head around the era. Perhaps Jeffries didn't beat an all time great in their prime, but very few great heavyweights did. The people he did beat were unquestionably the best of the era, which puts them a tier above Chuvalo, regardless of how big or old they were. Most historians accept that Jeffries was an empty shell when Johnson beat him up.
I actually see all the points your making and especially agree with the Jeff been past it against Johnson. Can I ask how you feel a Chuvalo V Jeffries fight would go? Do you see it going the distance like Ali V chuvalo, or Jeffrey's stopping him akin to foreman or Frazier?
I guess it depends which Jeffries shows up. the pre Ruhlin version would probably have counter punched Chuvalo, and taken a wide decision based on cleaner work. The version of the Munro fight would have taken the fight to Chuvalo, and it is possible to imagine him forcing a late stoppage like Frazier did. It is important to remember that while Jeffries needed rounds to put his opponents away, very few people actually survived him.
