Just been reading than Jim Corbett had a tank of oxygen hidden under the ring for his second fight with Jeffries. apparently Corbett had a large tank under the ring directly beneath his corner ,with a tube coming up to his stool , to waft refreshing air on his face and body. It changed nothing,it was a one sided rout. Corbett was floored by a big left hook to the body in the 4th round and the fight was also halted because a split was noticed in Jeff's left glove,after a quick inspection the fight was waved on. The minutes rest between the 4th and 5th round came and went and the glove was not replaced ,then as it was produced Bob Fitzsimmons, Jeff's second cut off the glove and pulled on a new one. Corbett was estimated to have benefited by over half a minutes additional rest. It didnt matter ,Jeffries was far too strong for Jim,his body punches doubled Corbett up and he laughed at his opponents return fire. Jeff dropped Corbett with a right to the jaw for a 9 count in the 6th. Corbett used his legs to avoid punishment when he could, and clinched for dear life when he couldn't. Corbett came back into it a bit in the 8th and had a decent 9th rd but was unable to hurt the Californian. Corbett told his seconds at the end of this round that he was done but would continue till he was stopped, Corebtt opened the 10th with a volley of punches , but they were like peas from a peashooter bouncing off a sheet of iron.A big left hook to the belly dropped Corbett for another nine count, but he gamely arose ,only to be floored by a right to the body he lay there agony on his face,seeing he was finished, his second Tommy Ryan retired him before the full count was completed.
