Jeffries was due to fight Tom sharkey for 25 rounds at coney Island in 1899, but sharkey drops out. Luckily a young heavy called rocky marciano, who was in training to fight Harry Matthew s, steps in instead. So it's the pre title version of marciano against Jeffries making his first defence. Jeffries to much for the rock? Marciano batters JJJ?
The way Jeffries comes forward with that low left which he often aims to the body, I see a potential 1st round KO.
I'm guessing he would do a wee bit better. I will say that Jeffries certainly had the raw materials, the strength, speed and toughness. But I don't think fighting like he did would translate well in the results column.
Marciano would be too much for this relatively inexperienced version of Jeffries, with an injured left arm going into the fight. Now if it was the Jeffries of the Munro fight, then that might be a different matter.
Marciano takes this, very confident. Those rights coming from rock, over Jeff's low hands break him down. Marciano stops Jeffries somewhere around the tenth. It won't be even close.
I think that Jeffries was a much better fighter when he fought Munro, than he was when he fought Sharkey. I suspect that you privately think the same thing.
Marciano batters and embarrasses Jeffries. Jeff would have trouble winning a toughman contest at any given bar these days... There is enough film of him to see how primitive and inept he would be against world-class boxers. I don't get it.
