The best version of the California Grizzly Bear versus the versions of : Walcott Charles x2 C*ckell Moore Lastarza That Rocky defended against ,15rds ,1950's gloves. What are your predictions? I see only Charles really troubling him.
Wow! You and I are at different ends of the spectrum, dude. Not forgetting Roland LaStarza I would have said he only would have beat Don ****ell. Nothing personal against big Jim, but I have never been a big fan of those turn of the century fighters and especially the Boilermaker's style. Those crude, ponderous swings would be made to order for those great counter-punchers like Walcott. But hey, it's just my opinion.
The Walcott in question is the Jersey Joe in the rematch, when to my way of thinking he decided he didn't want to go through that all over again.I forgot Lastarza I'll edit him in.:good
Rules. Over 20 plus rounds including unlimited with tiny gloves and no gumsheilds, i bet many of these superior boxers would have a real problem. Over 10/15, I suspect that many of them would be able to stay out of Jeffries way to take a decision.
So that favours Rocky's opponents. The sports are very different. It's very hard to pick 1900 fighters over 1950s fighters with 1950s rules. The basics are the same, but those fighters are fighting strategy and tactics overwhelmingly in keeping with their own time.
What's interesting in this one is that the weight advantage is overwhelmingly on the side of the old-timer for a change. I haven't seen much Jeffries to make a fair call on this one. Skills wise Rocky's opposition outclass Jeffries, at least by reputation but they've got a mountain to get out of there. Hey, if Dempsey could obliterate Willard, then I guess folks like Walcott and Charles would have a chance against Jeffries. :conf
It's conceivable that they might stop Jeffries on cuts ,but most unlikely imo ,that they can get him in enough trouble to force a stoppage.I do believe Jeffries had a top chin.
Agree, I doubt they would KO Jeffries. Seems unlikely. But I think they might carry enough power to keep him honest. I really have to chase down some more of these "ancient history" fights. Unfortunately the quality of the stuff around is often shocking.
We agree, but I think he knocks out Charles a bit earlier than Rocky did. For those who have not see it, I highly recommend Marciano vs Charles 1. A 15 round war!
BCBS, Jeffries is in his prime is a revelation. He was the first really fast 210+ pound big man with power, hand speed, footwork, and stamina. On defense, he could slip and duck, and was simply too strong and big in the clinches. Throw to the wolves early, there is little fat on his ring record. In many ways, he was a bigger version of Marciano, but I think he also looks a bit like Gene Fullmer. The film quality isn't great so you have to watch carefully. The only clear film of Jeffries in his prime is the 1901 training clips.
