How would you say the papers evaluated that [as you put it in Mendoza speak] "Jackson had re-ganied his form",because he had not had a fight in 3 years? If you wish to give credit to Jeffries for beating the ghost of Peter Jackson ,do so. No one else does.
The old Ring Record Book has Munroe listed as 5' 11 1/2". Who knows how accurate any of those old measurements are? I am just looking at the tales of the tape for the champions now. Jack Dempsey is listed at 6' 1". Joe Louis is listed as 6' 1 1/2" But the film which was shown from 1951 shows a Louis who looks quite a bit taller than Dempsey than just 1/2". Jim Jeffries is listed in the Ring Record Book as 6' 2 1/2" tall, or 3 inches taller than Munroe. He certainly doesn't look that in this picture. My guess is these published measurements were not accurate.
Dempsey was 55 when he got in the ring with Louis he had shrunk a bit by then. Have you ever seen a measurement for Munroe that makes him over 6 foot? If not, I think we' ll go for 5'11.5".
The bottom line with Munroe was that he was a mediocre contender, probably really undeserving of a shot at Jeffries. This is true whether we agree he was 5' 11" and 190 lbs or 6' 1" and 210 lbs. Being bigger doesn't make him any better. Jeffries was a big man in a little era. The other good fighters were much smaller. Ko'ing some of the big fellows of the era such as Dunkhorst and Plaake wouldn't mean anything regarding Jeff's standing, and neither does ko'ing Munroe.
Below is Munroe talking about his first encounter with Jeffries. He states that Jeffries hit him on the breakaway though they had agreed to break clean. Whatever, he is described here as over 6ft and scaling 195lbs. http://fultonhistory.com/newspaper ...ewspaper Auburn NY Bulletin 1903 a - 0092.pdf Below, a report stating Sharkey was a has been when he fought Munroe. The reporter states presciently that based on his performance against Sharkey,Munroe will prove to be Jeffries weakest challenger, next to Finnegan he was. http://boxingbiographies.com/bio/in...sk=view&id=228&Itemid=29&limit=1&limitstart=3
