The indestructible Boilermaker against the cold calculating boxer that was Gene Tunney 15 rds. Does Jeffries wear the Marine down or do Tunney's cutting punches and fast feet make a fool out of the Californian Grizzly Bear ? As a fading Corbett did for the majority of their first fight. What do you think?
I want Jeffries as my pick but there are strong cases for Tunney here. He was resilient as hell, but this is something else you gotta say. Also Tunney has the mobility and tools at his disposal. He's also very rugged. I dont know man
tunney wins this because at 190lb he would be too big for mr jeff. jeffries usually beat up middle/light-heavies .
Tough pick. The Corbett fight of 1900 tends me towards Gene in 15, as I think (guess?) Gene was comparable to Corbett in stamina and boxing ability and better in chin. HOWEVER -- a) I incline to view Jeffries-Corbett I as being a very close fight at the time of the stoppage; b) quite a few people thought that the Jeffries of '03-'04 had improved in quickness, activity and boxing skill. So now I don't know .....
James J. Jeffries - Gene Tunney in their primes! This would have been very close! If they fought 10 times, I could see this going 5 wins 4 losses and 1 draw. Jeffries would come out on top, in my opinion.
How long is the bout? A fifteen round duration would give Tunney an excelent chance. Beyond that the ballance of probability slips more towards the boilermaker.
