What prime film have you seen to call Jeffries a wrestler? Jeffires actually had good reflexes, good hand and foot speed, and hit hard with either body on hooks or straight shots, plus he had a good uppercut and body attack. Those who saw them both say Jeffries had better skills on offense and defense than Marciano did. Marciano was known as the crudest fighter ever to win the belt in the 50's, and this quote has context from men who knew boxing in the 00's.
Film clearly shows marciano not to be crude, but very skilled. You can say what historians think, but historians who saw both fitz and louis many think fitz was better and better puncher. LOL. so i take what people say of the era with a grain of salt.
I think Jeffries out of all the great heavyweights, was by far the crudest heavyweight champion of all time, and i think he is vastly overated as a puncher. He is more of a george chuvalo bull strongman durable type. not a great "fighter". jeffries would do very good in toughman contests IMO. Personally i think jack johnson would have outclassed jeffries badly had they fought in 1905 or 1906, similiar to calzaghe-lacy with jeffries being lacy. jeffries himself admitted he never would have beaten jack johnson even in his prime.
yeah and johnson said jeffries was the greatist heavy of alltime, tunney said in 20 rnds he never hit demsey square, dempsey was always modestly rating fighters above and beyond, johnson said he took a dive against willard liston said he didnt dive against ali -point is fighters are often very modest overpraising there opp. and past fighters, some lie some deny but u simply cant pick and choose what quotes to believe and wich ones not to
I'm prepared to accept that Jeffries was a clear level above the likes of Chuvalo,Randy Cobb etc,but I don't beleive he was anything approaching a defensive master ,he was badly marked up in too many fights for me to beleive he was very adept at eluding punches.
