I'm not sure when this picture of a fat Jeffries was taken, but it does show that he most definitely put on a lot of weight between the Johnson fight and the fight previous. This content is protected
I love seeing old fart fighters from way back running in an old office suit and hard shoes..... MR.BILL
I sense an agenda here by the thread starter. Those who know boxing well can tell you when a fighter drops a lot of weight to train for a fight, his stamina and strength suffer as does his timing. For a modern day example, look at Riddick Bowe. Bowe would balloon up at times, then shed weight, but it clearly affected his performance. Except in Bowe's case he was in his 20's, and active. Jeffries was 35 and had not fought in 5+ years, and had even more weight than Bowe had to lose to get into shape.
Of course you who have never boxed ,would know it well. Bowe did not have the luxury of 18 months to get down to weight. The thread I put up shows Jeffries was only 8lbs above his eventual weight for the Johnson fight, 9 months before the contest . Jeffries had the best part of 18 months to diet and get into shape. My thread shows he was allready well on course 9 months before the fight, that is not crash dieting, which is what robs you of stamina.ala Lamotta, v SRR , Lesnevich v Mills 2etc That is not an agenda, that is a fact that you need to digest and ,deal with.
He was easily the number 1 man the public wanted to see fight johnson. He should have got himself into better shape and only has himself to blame.
Once he officially announced he was coming out of retirement, he went on two consecutive vaudeville tours and made an absolute fortune. His choice.
He should have hired some real sparring partners rather than his hack brother. And he really, really should have had some warm up fights.
I have wondered why he didn't? Maybe he believed [as you said ,] that the fight ,originally scheduled for Frisco was bagged . Corbett, and Muldoon, both believed Jeffries suffered a nervous collapse in the late stages of his training.
