AT THAT TIME, I would have to look to be SURE, but pretty sure Super Joe was Lacy's 21st fight, AND the only win of any kind of note was a shot to **** Reid!:yep
I love how guys are so quick to dismiss Warren's quotes when he is ragging on Calzaghe about he wouldn't come to America or how he would avoid fights, fake injuries......... but he is a bastion of truth when it comes to every other fighter, suddenly worthy of quoting.
That was a blatant lie. Slappy tried to save face by claiming he offered Pavlik a fight after Lacy. When JC was busy ducking Pavlik he claimed KP wasn't a big enough name. **** almighty! Kelly wasn't a big enough name after he beat Miranda and beat Taylor twice, but he was a big enough name when he was recovering from hand surgery, and his best win was Zuniga?atsch You need to get your facts straight on this. Calzaghe lied, and then hid beyond shot to **** Roy Jones. That's history, not opinion!
Its true. Pavlik was offered a fight with Calzaghe before he was MW champ. Its agood job Pavlik didnt take it, as he probably wouldnt have become a world champ had he taken the fight with Calzaghe. Also im glad Pavlik didnt take it as you would be on here now saying its not a credible win
Calzaghe's decision to fight Jones is fairly indefensible. He probably would have beaten Taylor, Pavlik and Glen Johnson but a case can be made that he ducked them all. Inexcusable really. If Ricky Hatton could get fights with the best (Tszyu, Mayweather Jr, Pacquiao) then why not Calzaghe. Then again, would you rather be Hatton or Calzaghe? Calzaghe was petrified of losing - he didn't want to end up losing like Hatton so he played it safe.
Hopkins was the highest ranked fighter P4P (apart from Calzaghe) between 160 and 175 when Calzaghe fought him. Which kind of invalidates your question because the answer is 'he did'.
Sure, the argument can be made that Calzaghe fought and beat the best (Hopkins) thereby making fights with Taylor, Pavlik and Glen Johnson unnecessary.
Well the timescale for any potential Johnson/Calzaghe fight is several years removed and the various reasons for that not happening are well known. You can't really make an argument that Calzaghe should have fought Taylor, with the way things went. If Taylor had beat Pavlik the fight would have happened, but he didn't and there was no sense in it after that. Calzaghe at that time was fighting Kessler, a unified SMW champion for 168 supremacy and P4P top four Hopkins. Calzaghe could have fought Pavlik rather than Jones for a better win in legacy terms, but the Jones fight offered significantly more money and Calzaghe wanted a cash out. Shame because it was always clear to me that Calzaghe would have clowned Pavlik by completely shutting down his output with footwork alone in much the same way Hopkins did. Trouble is the legacy value of beating someone with as thin a resume as Pavlik quickly degrades (Hopkins win is already looked upon less favourably than it was at the time), so people exagerate how much of a legacy win it wouldve been.
