Jermain Taylor ducked Calzaghe

Yeah, Calzaghe had a very close fight with Hopkins that could have been scored a draw or a win for Hopkins and I would have had no issue with just as I had no issue with Calzaghe getting the win, and luck was on his side that the judges saw in his favor. Both Taylor and Calzaghe got the nod by out-working and out-punching Hopkins, but Hopkins, according to compubox outlanded Taylor both fights while Calzaghe outlanded Hopkins, so the case could be made that Calzaghe did more to ensure that he got the rub of the green than Taylor did.

 

so that means taylor landed far more accurate punches and more damaging than calzage, and calzaghes were very poor quality punches indeed by comparison.

taylor did what calzaghe did with FAR less work, he didn't need to resort to volume punching and counting on outgassing Bernard with his younger lungs.

in other words, Jermaine outboxed Hopkins on skill but joe, lacking such skill, had to rely on Hopkins being old in order to beat him.

 

Compubox stats are bulli**** anyway, but that apart, if count grazing slaps with the inside of the glove as punches then yeah, Calzaghe landed a lot, but you only count real punches then I doubt Calzaghe landed 20 punches all fight.

 

It should be worth pointing out that Calzaghe style was generally to overwhelm his opponents with volume punching and outlast them with his superior conditioning so I dont really think you can say he had the "need to resort" to that technique when that was pretty much what he did anyway.

 

well that's blatantly untrue that he didn't try to mix it with Bernie Hop early on, but he failed to equal him skill 4 skill. And since he failed and therefore had to fall back on knowing he simply wait and then outgass old Hopkins.

 

Joe never overwhelmed anything.

For some reason I think I remember Kelly's camp wanting more time before the fight to get Pavlik ready. Although in boxing its all smoke and mirrors. Either way I think we can safely say Calzaghe would have easily dispatched pavlik or taylor and that isn't bigging up the welshman as you can make an argument for other fighters potentially beating him but these two? I think not.

If you think Pavlik would have won then I'm glad for you but I can't help but think that's a little crazy. If you want to pick prime Jones, B-hop, Toney etc. as people to beat him then cool I see exactly what you're getting at but Taylor and Pavlik? C'mon man...

Evidently he wasn't as confident as you about his shoe-in victory over Pavlik.

 

i'd say going on best performances, pavlik and calzaghe are about level. pavlik has those two victories and calzaghe has two victories against prime top fighters too.

sure calzaghe has much better longevity, but best for best single performances like for like, pavlik and calzaghe reached the same heights.

joe steered clearfor a reason, it was a 50/50 fight and not the 90/10s he'd got used to.

 

in fact, even the one tough fight that he took on (apart from the reid which was VERY tough for him so much that he arguably lost it and then ran from a rematch) against Kessy Mikk was one he tried to run away from repetedly.

joe went by his word in every fight he took, he didn't want tough fights, and theres only one reason people do that, to build up a largely uncompetitive unbeaten record.

gotta gve him credit for proving he could beat a top fighter in his careers last smw fight, good one on beating mik.

 

At no point have I suggested he was super confident about winning the fights. It's well documented that he nearly pulled out of several of his defining fights such as Kessler and Lacy. That however doesn't diminish his level of ability and I think you need a higher calibre of fighter to beat him than Taylor or pavlik. I think Reid at his best could have probably beat pavlik at SMW too. I mean RJJ would have beaten lots of guys fairly easily that he avoided but for whatever reason didn't want to.
