I'm glad that Jermain finally got rid of Ozell Nelson. When the conflict between Nelson and Burns started JT should have told Ozell to shut the **** up and get in the back seat! I've given this subject considerable thought, and I honestly believe that if Taylor would have stuck with Burns, he would have had a very different career.
I don't know about very different career because Burns was with JT up until the Hopkins fights. Or even in the Spinks and Ouma fights if i'm not mistaken. So he was with Burns for most of his career. JT's flaws still existed when he was with Burns, it's just that they weren't exposed as much because he didn't face his kryptonite (heavy handed fighters who come forward) yet. Pavlik, Froch and AA exposed his limits. He has no defense. And i seriously doubt you can teach an old dog new tricks. He is what he is.
Absolutely agree, not to say he would be an ATG, but his career would have been better. People who aren't as familar with Jermain and/or his career, might dismiss this and say "his chin is his chin", which on some levels is true, but had he not fatigued the last third of fights, his chin may not have been exposed and left out there for guys. Pat ALWAYS had JT prepared, both physically and from a game plan perspective, he was also very honest with Jermain. He knew when to pick him up and when to get on his ass, JT is an emotional guy and feeds off his corner. I understand some percieve this as weakness, and it may but not the point, either way Jermain needs/needed that direction form his corner and he trusted that what Pat told him would work. The last and most important idea relating to Pat/JT is that Pat demanded JT work behind his jab, which prior to the Hopkins fight was generally considered one of the best in boxing...where did that go, and had he stayed with the blueprint (in ring) that got him to the title, why would you expect that he wouldn't continue on that level? He beat one of the longest reigning and most complete Champions of our time...TWICE using it, obviously there was something to it.
Manny isn't a yes man, he just tried to rebuild him into Tommy Hearns, and basically undid everything that Pat had taught him. He tried to convert into a "power puncher" and that he's not, he's a decent puncher with a great jab and great athleticism. He should have built off his already great jab, and helped him grow into his own fighter as opposed to trying to make him someone else.
I'd like to gradually see him step up from a gimme like Drafir Smith or Antwun Echols to a couple fights on the level of Curtis Stevens, Peter Manfredo, or Miranda to toughen himself up and get his timing back before facing someone at the top.
Pat Burns would not have under estimated and disrespected Kelly Pavlik the way Steward did. Without that first beating everything changes.
