It seems every time someone beat Jermain Taylor. They suddenly become very overrated. Until someone exposes them. 1- Kelly Pavlik: After his two wins over Taylor he became mister unbeatable. Future all time great. Potentially one of the greatest middleweight of all time. Don't deny it. This forum was filled with those treads and most boxing journalists agreed. Until he was schooled by Hopkins. 2- Carl Froch: The guy went from nobody to one of the best if not the best 168lbs in the world after his win over Taylor. He was going to knock out Bute, Kessler, etc... He was the most avoided 168lbs in the world, etc.... Then he looked terrible and arguably lost to Andre Dirrell. Now most people think he's ****. 3- Arthur Abraham: After a pretty pathetic title run at 160lbs during which he really beat nobody worth mentioning. He moves up and beat Jermain Taylor. Now most people favor him to win the whole thing (Super Six) and it's not rare to see people pick him over guys like Kessler, Froch, Bute, etc... I mean seriously? Is the Abraham hype train the next one to derail? I guess the most important question is why is it that when somebody beats Jermain Taylor they suddenly become "the man".
I don't really understand it either, since Taylor was never that good himself, and is still extremely overrated. If it wasn't for the HBO hype and influence and the GIFT DECISIONS that brought, Taylor would be just another contender who fell short.
Because Jermain Taylor was an American poster boy of HBO. I agree with Zak on this one. Taylor was\is a good fighter, but far from the all conquering hero was made out to be.
I'm not trying to put down Taylor or the other fighters mentioned above. I'm just curious about the whole concept of "beating Taylor = best boxer EVER!!!!!!OMG!!!!". You know what I mean?
I have always thoughts of Jermain Taylor the same way. Excellent post. Spinks and Ouma almost beat Taylor for crying out loud.
seriously, i like AA but ever since he knocked out taylor he became a greek god on ESB who can beat any middleweight that ever lived. ive become a fan of his but my god! the things some people say about him:-(
Pathetic? I wouldn't say that, He proved his toughness, will, determination and power in pretty much all of his fights. He beat undefeated Miranda with a broken jaw, Khoren Gevor (who obviously beat Sturm), and some solid contenders in Ayala, Simon and Marquez... Sure, them contenders aren't really anything to brag about but really who else was out there, when this so called Alcoholic from Youngstown was to *****? Or should i say his promoter? Still... thats just bullcrap and Abraham wanted none if it and got sick and tired so he moved to SMW. Abraham is a very good boxer with fantastic power and precision. He reminds me a lot of a style Michalczewski had or even Adamek has. He likes to conserve his energy in the opening rounds and as time progresses he starts pulling more combination's and just everything improves. In other words, Abraham doesn't fight a fight from rounds 1-12, he fights from rounds 12-1. As in most normal boxers get tired in the later rounds while Abraham is just absorbing a bit and getting better as time progresses. This man is smart and has a smart trainer and is physically fit and ready for all comers at 168. I dont understand all the underestimation torwards Abraham, i really don't. The man is proven in almost every important aspect of boxing(chin, heart, stamina etc..) and has very good gifts and talents. come on now, this is Abraham, hes not some chump like Froch
If anything, blame Hopkins for not setting things straight in the rematch. If Taylor wasn't much more than a contender, Bernard shouldn't have had any business losing to him. Twice. People got hype by beating Taylor because he was "the man", and typically that's the way hype works- you take out an undisputed or former undisputed champ, your stock skyrockets. That's what got Jermain's bandwagon rolling and that's what happened to those who beat him. That was aided by Jermain's uncanny ability to not just lose, but go down in highlight reel fashion for 3 of those 4 losses. Fans might dislike the hype Jermain was getting, but at the end of the day it can't be taken away that he was the lineal middleweight champion of the world, which is one of the most prestigious titles in the sport. It's not surprising that the hype has followed those who've beaten him because of that.
Taylor is a good fighter. He fights. Compare him with Haye running and Dirrell running, holding, complaining and falling down on canvas.
Because he has 2 "wins" over Hopkins on his record. It don't make him the man though. He definitely had the talent but sort of stagnated.
Taylor is a very good fighter. Problem is that he looked stupid in the 12th round of the Froch fight. He obviously had the wrong game plan. I'm sure he wouldn't lose a 2nd time against Froch. Pavlik and Abraham are complete different foes though. Still I would take Taylor to win against Ward or Dirrell, because they lack the kind of power that Pavlik and especially AA have in their punches.
This. People take a beat-the-guy-who-beat-the-guy approach and since Hopkins is an ATG it makes Taylor and everyone who beats him look good, problem is that never works. BHop has trouble with athletic fighters(Jones, Calzaghe, Taylor) so it was easy to rob him against Taylor because the fights could have gone either way. HBO needed a new face and Hopkins was getting old. Taylor on the other hand has trouble with guys with power and good chins(Pavlik, Froch, Abraham). Hopkins does not have trouble with guys like that(Tito, Pavlik). Pavlik is a come forward slugger who's exciting, he throws alot of bombs and can take alot of them. He'll be the top MW for as long as it's void of talent, which is not long considering all of the up and coming talent. One of those guys who will be a threat to anybody, but beatable by guys with game plans who can stay focused and follow through. Abraham is one dimensional and was protected for many years making lousy title defences. He will be outboxed soundly in the near future. Froch is garbage.
