Don King would have loved this one. Two Irish guys with contrasting personalities. I'm not sure if I've seen enough on Fury, but I don't think he could take Cooney's power, so he'd have to win on skills. Cooney was the type who didn't like the spotlight but he could be a volcano if pissed off. I think Fury's pre fight talk and ring antics would make Cooney more aggressive and less nervous than usual. Cooney wins this one, I think. 12 rounds Clean VADA PED tests 10 point must.
I honestly have to go with Fury. He rose off the canvas against Wilder who I think hit at least as hard as Cooney and probably should have gotten the decision. For once in his life Gerry would be in against a bigger man and one with a better chin, stamina and boxing skill
The issue with Cooney is that he is a one handed puncher. Did Cooney have enough power in his right hand to hurt Fury? IMO Fury is clever enough to avoid Cooney's left while boxing him from a distance. Fury UD 12 with a few rocky moments.
Fury is packing some UK glass, he was hurt by a blown up cruiser not known for power. Cooney if he lands to the head or body ( He had a great body punch which hurt Larry Holmes ), would likely win. Jerry was 6'6" tall and had an 81" reach, enough to reach Fury. Not a confident pick, thats how I see it.
Do you mean Fury with a hand in the back vs Cooney? Yeah then Fury wins a competitive UD. If we are talking about 2 hands Fury then he wins in a one sided class of boxing, late Ko
I'd pick Fury, he's a better more talented boxer with quicker reflexes than Gerry, but Cooney is a hard hitter, mostly with the big left and would be dangerous in the early rounds. He did hurt Norton with a right hand iirc in their brief fight. Ken was post-prime then, mind you. I'd take a careful Fury to largely nullify Gerry"s left in what might be a sloppy bout at times imo. Fury decision.
Sure but Cooney only has one weapon. He doesn't have a right hand. Fury is good enough to avoid a one handed fighter.
Cooney was just too limited and predictable to beat a guy with Fury's bag of tricks and ring IQ. It's not as if Cooney's stamina or durability were top notch, either. He's got the old puncher's chance, a fairly slim one, but that's it. Some of the hype around Fury might have gone a bit OTT since he humiliated Wilder, but he's a genuine Heavyweight champion of some significance now and a different class of fighter to Cooney. I think Fury stops him late having been in control throughout.
Depends. After weeks of Fury mouthing off against Cooney at press conferences, Cooney would either be completely mentally defeated, or pissed off enough to get really, really, angry. People are kidding themselves if they don't think Cooney has a chance. One left hook landed accurately and it's back to his trailer for Fury. However, I see Fury winning a close UD, and he goes down at least once.
