Jerry Quarry 1967 vs Ken Norton 1975, who wins and why?

People love hating me for this. Norton by close decision or late stoppage. A helluva war like their actual fight. No knockdowns though @Richard M Murrieta.

Norton by close decision. There's very few fighters he loses to who don't have a devastating punch imo

 

Quarry by knockout, he was crazy fast with those counters. accurate, And was decking people with one punch! still Norton was at his best 1975-77- Quarry was also double tough at 22. And I think he could take the best Norton had to offer. AND SLIP THE JAB.

THEY WERE BOTH WORKING ON BECOMING THE NUMBER #1 CONTENDER.

 

Quarry stops Norton late, around the 8th or 9th round, in a good fight.

 

I think the 1967 version of Quarry was better than the 1975 rendition who actually fought Norton. Therefore it may very well be a different affair. That said I’m still not entirely sure who I’d favor. While Jerry was an awesome boxer and counter puncher he was no Muhammad Ali and nor was he colossal hitter with all time great punching ability. You generally had to be one or the other to beat a prime Ken Norton. Jerry for as great as he was didn’t fall into either category.

 

Not that it’s the be all end all but Quarry would always get the better of Norton in their sparring sessions and knocked him out cold more than once.

I think I’ll go for Quarry providing he doesn’t get a nasty cut.

 

This is the kind of "sparring story" evidence that seems more respectable than most offerings. Assuming we get it from reliable sources, the fact that Quarry (whom we know to have been pretty brutal in sparring, at least with his brother) was *consistently* beating Norton up when the two were near their primes is something to consider.

 

I didn’t realize this. But did quarry’s sparring sessions take place when Norton was at his best from say 1973-1977, or were they more like around 1969-1971 during Ken’s Jose Luis Garcia days ? If the latter is true then that could make all the difference in the world

 

I'm not sure they sparred at all often. The story i recall is that Quarry knocked him out once and another time he floored him, supposedly. There's a fair chance it happened. It's also HUGELY likely it was against Norton before he turned the corner after which he ended up a totally different proposition. So we aren't left with any conclusive proof of too much, really. It's also fair to say Quarry was a terrible version of himself when they fought.

They are a similar level these two. I find Quarry's power a bit underrated. It would be a good contest and you could mount a decent argument for either.
