This was triggered by Ali cancelling on Quarry; a proposed third fight, for which the contracts had apparently be drawn up. Quarry had alleged that similar situations had occurred previously with other opponents, such as Norton and Foreman and he felt he was being 'boycotted'.

I've always perceived this little episode to be about what it's always about - and that's money! I think Quarry felt he was being shafted for what would have been some good percentages.

Ali's next fight, instead of Quarry, was against Foreman, later the same year.

Ali mentioned this in his autobiography:

Looking back on the scramble to firm up the fight and all of Herbert's sifting through of bids from promoters in at least fourteen countries in Europe, Asia and Africa, one of the shakiest moments came not because of Foreman but because of me.

I saw a chance to fight Quarry before taking on Foreman. Fighting Quarry appealed to me because he was flying up and down the country crying that black fighters were "boycotting" him.

"I'd like to shut Quarry up once and for all!" I said when I met with Arum and Brenner in Herbert's New York apartment. King, who was solidly opposed to the Quarry fight, had stashed himself away in the bedroom so he could come out at the right time to counterattack.

"Look, the Foreman fight will never come off," Arum said. "The investors are backing out already. Go ahead and take this Quarry fight. It's a sure thing."

"Why go with Don King?" Brenner insisted. "Don't you know King is a gangster? A killer? We don't want this gangster in the business."

I picked up the pen to sign, but Bundini, who's been with me all morning, broke out in tears: "Champ, don't do it. Think of all the people in Africa you'd be letting down. Far as King being a gangster, it was gangsters that built Madison Square!"

Later I found out that an intermediate fight with Quarry would make the backers in Zaire pull out because they would be afraid I might get cut or butted by Quarry and force a cancellation of the title date.

It was Herbert who decided the issue by abruptly letting me know he was opposed to my signing.

I let Quarry go. He would keep on crying about being boycotted until he got a fight with Joe Frazier. They had to stop the fight to save his life.

All people are the same when they have power they control. I dont think its racial just human nature.

Don King had his years but I dont think he did anything to help blacks, he helped himself. King was a pimp.

Once people stop believing they are people and just a color, religion or nationality that is what they themselves put themselves in another place.

was it because Quarry was white or because he was dangerous vs certain styles? I think the latter

    Green is the color

Ali whupped the man already after 3 year layoff. Quarry should be thankful he got the best chance anyone ever got of beating ali, and failed in it.

I think this was "The New Jerry Quarry Part 3" era. The one where Ali was scared and ducking him.

Quarry fought Ali in 72, Lyle and Shavers in 73, Frazier in 74, and Norton in 75.

Quarry was frustrated and grasping at straws. Dundee came back and said something to the effect that “hes had more chances at the big dance than anyone. He loses, comes back, and hes more popular than ever. Go figure.” Thats not a direct quote but its the gist of it.

He should have been proud of his career it has a case of elite, he almost never lost to a non-elite. And he faced an awful lot of elites.

Definatley...I grew up in the Morrison era and the fans hounded him bc he was white which was rare back then in the early 90's.

He certainly got a bad rap bc of his skin color anyone who surrounded themselves with other fans and followed media would know this.

Im not saying it was wrong bc that was the times, but it had more meaning back then bc non black HW relevant guys were rare years ago.

It actually helped market Morrison outside the rocky movie.

Is it unfair to place it? Maybe but walking into a sport where you stand out that's what will happen, particularly in a combat sport .

The truth is Morrison to this day is not taking very seriously bc he follows THAT stereotype but he was a talented fighter who hindered his career bc he partied as much as he trained.

It should be noted he got knocked out in the fight he is being interviewed in here....for reasons described of not being 100% dedicated. lol

Besides some dumb things guys like Ali and Tyson say when they're younger, there's no racism in boxing lol. I do remember Chuck Wepner saying that Ali said some racist stuff to him during their fight, so it can be assumed that Ali did the same to Quarry, who might've put two together with little actual proof.

Quarry would've have faired well against Ali in a third fight, however, so he doesn't have a right to talk.

I vaguely remember reading about Morrison becoming a white supremacist later in life. I wonder about the connection between these perceived grievances and his later extremism.
