Had Jerry got that shot, it certainly wouldn't have been earned. He would have jumped ahead of two guys that had beaten him. You could argue that Norton didn't really earn it either, coming off a close lose to Ali. But that he gave Ali such problems obviously elevated his standing. Foreman has said that he didn't want to face Norton, but had to since he was the mandatory. Don't know if that's true or not. George says a lot of things.

Let's face it after Marciano black heavyweights took over.
I think if you were a white heavyweight from the start of the 60's onwards you would have a bit of a job on to be taken seriously, so possibly one or two did develop a chip on their shoulder.
I mean they weren't supposed to be as tough or as hard as the black fighters, and of course there was the old white hope stuff still going on in the background.
Jerry certainly gained credibility simply because of what he was doing in the ring, but he certainly can't complain about the opportunities he was given.

Certain groups of people can get away with saying racy things, as long as the media who covers them tolerates it.

Quarry had tax problems, and other issues out of the ring so credibility isn't the best, but he's not wrong pointing out there is a double standard.

If one were to take some of Ali's racy statements, and put them into print under another man's name, he'd sound like a Louis Farrakhan supporter. But those were the 1960's, a turbulent time. Race relations are much better today.

I was recently told racism goes one way. I am from Europeon decent but have been cursed at by both sides at some rare times in my life and it does go both ways.

I have met great people of all nations, races & religions but also some very bad people of every group.

I was raised to respect everyone but never never never take any Bull from anyone regardless of race, religion or nationality and this suprised many people at times but allows me to look in the mirror as the type of man I like to think I am.

There were neiborhoods in NY metro area that being identified as white you needed a gun to enter but the crime in the area was so high many of the victims were also black.

I think the best way is to forget the past and live in the now. Beware because the human race has more bad than good regardless of race but there are alway Great people in all races that make a difference.

Poor reznik, despite all our disagreement I don't think he's a bad guy at all. 0 maliciousness with him, he just holds some unconventional opinions and means well.

Reznick, judging by your Youtube channel, I had no clue that you were such a girl.

Well, there are things like degrees, believe it or not.

First there are those that just thinks the fight ended unsatisfactory. I can fully understand that and also agree to some extent.

But saying that Ward won it on low blows means either trolling, bias or no knowledge of boxing in my book. Not necissarily racial bias, though. But seeing how strong that sentiment was with many I did suspect that racial bias was a reason for some and thus posed the question like I did. Most answered according to my suspicion before the whole thing got shut down, but that could be trolling.

BUT I DO NOT INTEND TO OPEN THIS DISCUSSION AGAIN SINCE I DON'T WANT ANOTHER BAN.

I only mentioned it to show that the mods also crack down on those implying racial bias from whites, not just against whites. And if I remember correctly my ban was two weeks, double the one @reznick got. :)

Thank you. These days people are just always looking for a way to call someone a racist.

That's interesting, because I heard that his mother was Cherokee, Native American.

Fights that stand out for me are for example fights like Bowe-Golota, Loma-Salido, Corrales-Castillo (forget which one, it was the mouth piece thing), Hopkins-Calzaghe (Hopkins pretending to be hit low to buy time to rest). There you had clear intentional fouling and cheating, often repeated (Salido).

The category next to that is many of Wlad's and Hopkins's fights, if we're talking more recent times. Wlad serially got away with holding and leaning on his opponent and many of Hopkins's almost became bar brawls. B-Hop perfected the art of fouling one the side the ref didn't see.

Except for Kova's antics and the pretty weird ending in Ward-Kova II, I see nothing out of the ordinary in that fight. I mean, even Hatton-Tsuy could be called more controversial if one wanted to go there. With Tsuy first flooring Hatton with a blow that landed very much like the above mentioned from Ward, but the ref neither calling it a KD or giving Tsuy a warning, and Hatton soon after retaliating with a clearly intentional low blow straight to Tsuy's groin. That blow probably took a lot out of Kostya. And I'm not saying that this is particularily controversial, just that stuff like this frequently happens.

I do agree with you about one thing: that Ward's style isn't that easy on the eye. Wouldn't go as far as say "rough, ugly", but it's certainly not very aesthetic.

I've stated my reason's why I can't from a rational perspective really for the life of me understand what was so special about anything before the ending, except Kova's antics. Something like that I rarely see in boxing. Punches that maybe look a fraction low in slow motion replays... that's just run of the mill. That the latter was much, much more critisized than the former is something I can't really get my head around.

All in all, the reactions both before and after Ward-Kova II were overall the most bizarre I've ever seen. Your comparison with Dempsey-Sharkey is just another example of all the almost surreal exagerrations. I'll leave it at that.
