Nothing I disagree with here. I'm not sure it's the whole story, but that's a discussion that doesn't need to get rehashed. :)

Ward really did himself a disservice by fouling. By ending the fight on a foul he not only cemented his rep as a dirty fighter, but also robbed himself of a legitimate victory later on. I think Kovalev's lax training habits had caught up to him and he was probably en route to a late fight TKO loss. The foul robbed us of the clean finish.

You don't think the foul had anything to do with Kova doubling up in an illegal position like he did? With that Ward couldn't see where he was aiming because of that position?

Nah. I think the foul had to do with Ward wanting to win and taking the opportunity to give Kova's future kids a flat spot on their heads.

Have you tried landing on someone who doubles over like that? I have, numerous times, and always find it very hard not to risk to stray low when I can't see where I'm aiming. Because of their poor defense forcing them to adopt an illegal position.

Just the other week, when Vargas dipped low with his head, Khan had no compunction against clipping him at the back of his head. Technically an illegal area to punch. Vargas didn't like that, but I haven't heard that it was supposed to be controversial. And, mind you, Khan definitely did it intentionally.

Some good replays from 5:40 here:

Sorry man, I haven't boxed. Last time somebody went low like that it was to punch me in the nuts and I rammed his head into a sink.

Ward's got a bit of a rep re: dirty fighting, and I'm not buying it. Is it possible that somehow he wasn't aiming for the crown jewels? yeah, I guess. Do *I* believe it? No.

If you're standing doubled over like Kova did against anyone who knows what he's doing, you'd get the back of your head smashed in, your face pulverized by knees or your back broken from an elbow before you could even think of ramming his head into the sink. You probably wouldn't need to worry too much about your groin, though, since it wouldn't be nearly as exposed as your back and back of your head.

That's why you shouldn't put yourself in a submissive position, in a street fight or in boxing.

Yeah it never occurred to me to use knees and elbows at the time. It was straight to a headlock and into the sink. Lots of coulda-woulda's in my life :p Mind you maybe for the best. If I'd elbowed the back of the head the dude could have been a quadriplegic today for all we know.

Not much that's worse than getting your smasheded into a sink, but an elbow to the back of the head probably is.
