Was watching the 1976 bout between George Foreman and Scott Ledoux the other night ... Jerry Quarry was doing televised commentary and in round one mentioned he sparred w Foreman in the past and stated that Foreman was far and away the strongest fighter he ever came up against ... I never heard definitive statements that the two had sparred in the past .. does anyone know more about it ?
There's a big difference watching a 1:05 min video of Foreman punching a heavy bag...and watching Foreman swinging and missing and being gassed after 3-4 rounds of boxing!
Its really interesting what you can pick up from unedited live broadcasts - including comments that don’t make it into more popularly recorded history. I think it was during the Shavers - Clark II when Quarry also basically said that Earnie was the only current fighter to work with weights - defying popular training advice - and he certainly didn’t mention Norton in the same breath. Never heard that information anywhere else but a golden revelation nonetheless - and Jerry seemed pretty up and very reliable on good info re his contemporaries.
Foreman’s people still marched him off to Jimmy Young for an a$$ whipping or maybe it was on the way up when he was building himself
I don’t think Quarry would win he opened up a lot and his chin was a stand out feature which it should never be - I don’t consider Frazier an overly smart fighter and he found Jerry a lot. I don’t think Foreman will have any issue KOing Quarry.
Doesn't seem very accurate given all the praise Jerry gave George. And as others have noted, Jerry got hit plenty by boxers who were inferior to George who was good at cutting off the ring and pressuring the opponent.
Towards the end of his career going into the 70's JQ was more willing to stand and punch but his early career he was a very good counterpuncher....wasn't there so I can't validate stories but they were out their.....JQ fought anyone who got in the ring with him unlike GF's people who avoided certain opponent styles and even then he almost got KO'd by Ron Lyle....his people avoided KO artists like Shavers etc.....but welcomed certain styles like Frazier/ Norton etc.....crossed arm defense and swarmer styles with good power not great.....they knew that Foremans style needed to avoid counterpuncher styles...like Ali(impossible to avoid due to fans calling ) Quarry (could be bad if he stuck with moving he did stop Lyle big powerhouse with better boxing than Foreman) and of course Young put the exclamation point on how to beat Foreman.....hell even Tommy Morrison used the stick and move to success on Foreman.
