So how would Quarry have fared do you think, if he'd come along later, and hit prime in the 1990 s? Let's say he hits the era around the same time has Morrison, Mercer, Moorer etc?
Quarry could beat most of the slow plodders, he had good enough whiskers and head movement to survive them. Where Jerry had trouble was with speed if someone beat him to the punch consistently like Ali and Frazier. He could beat Morrison because of power, he could out tough Mercer to get the nod, He could KO Moorer. Tyson and Lewis would stop him IMO
Another good one,Fergy. Quarry loses to Holyfield,Bowe,Lewis,Tyson (Up to 1997) old Foreman etc. He has a good shot at the rest.
Quarry beat Patterson so I'm not sure speed was his nemesis except against Ali. Jerry had above average hand speed, good fundamentals, knockout power and great courage. He beat some big punchers. He didn't always fight intelligently. He tried to match body shots with Joe Frazier, a big mistake. He could've been champ but he fought a dumb fight against Jimmy Ellis for the vacant title.
Thanks Stevie. I'm on the same page, fella. He's not beating those names. The one he'd stand most chance is probably old George. But that depends when he meets him and how exactly he fights him.
He also might lose to Morrison and Moorer. Him and Alex Stewart and Bert Cooper would be a good scrap. I think Tua would get him.
With Ellis he did have back problems, against Patterson fights were close but I believe Quarry dropped Floyd in each fight. Young Jerry did not always fight smart because as a young man his father mismanaged and trained him poorly, as he aged he didn't always train properly but gained some experience....He took Shavers best and stopped him in 1st, I seen him do the same with Big Mac Foster 24-0 24, KO,s Quarry disciplined Ron Lyle and his power kept Ron honest. By the time he fought Norton Alcohol and drugs got the best of him and he was a shell physically I believe Quarry would have a good long shot vs Foreman and would have stopped Ken Norton in his prime.
I think that Quarry would have fared just about the way he did in the late 1960s and 1970s. He would have lost to the best and have been very competitive with all of the other top guys.
Lower end of the top 10, I feel like the comp for the time would be Bruce Seldon, might capture a title.
Ahh the great white hope clash, Quarry V Morrison It's a possible danger fight for Quarry, he could be hurt in that one. Never thought of Moorer v Quarry, that's a good un.
