JERRY QUARRY was Ranked by Ring Magazine , and whom in order he was ranked going into bout vs Opponents. PRE-FIGHT (Means what Quarry was ranked like say Ali, he's taking on Muhammad Ali you know the greatest- Quarry was ranked #1 by Ring Magazine.
Wasn't his obsession with that guy who Ali didn't fight, he was top 5 ranked for a short while but kept losing when he stepped up a level?
Yeah The Irish Indian guy, Jerry undefeated in 20 bouts loses To Machen, fights his way to the WBA Championship at #2 Lost 15 round Majority decision to Jimmy Ellis Fights back to #3 loses to Frazier 1969 back at #3 loss to Chuvalo Beats 24-0 Mac Foster #1 contender, loses cut to Ali Fights back to #2 loses to Ali Again 1972 Beats #3 Ron Lyle back in contention 1973 Loses to Frazier again AT #3 Heartbreaker under Gil Clancy Not the result -THE FIGHT Steady as #5 contender loss to Norton MSG Annouced JQ as #3 contender
TOP 5 FOR A SHORT TIME? Try nine years, Quarry beat 8 ranked fighters Quarry number 1 (WBA) 1968, Ring Magazine 1970 a lot better than just number 5 (for a short time) Foster #1 Spencer #2 Lyle #3 Patterson #5 Shavers #6 Mathis #6 Middleton #7 Bodell #8 very few World Champions in any division attain that. and no heavyweight contenders who never won a title comes close. Unless you can name one? Lyle and Bonavena (4) Jimmy Ellis (5)

He was the guy the got dropped by George Chuvalo and was hit so hard that he jumped up right after the ref counted 10 like he was ready to fight. He also went 0-5 vs. Frazier (LKOby7 and LKOby5), Ali (LKOby3 and LKOby7), and Norton (LKOby5). No shame in losing to these man but revisionist would like you to think that he was close to being on the level with these men. They all dominated him and stopped him pretty easily. He did manage to decision a pre-prime Ron Lyle and stopped the not so durable Ernie Shavers. He was outboxed by a past prime Eddie Machen and by Jimmy Ellis. A past prime Patterson dropped him and gave him two tough fights (a draw and a MD win for Quarry). Quarry was good, far from great.
