Deontay Wilder has been in the Ring top 10 since 2013 (eight continuous years) and, since 2016 (five years ago), has only been as low as #3 for a couple months. The rest of the time, he's been in the top 2. He's at #2 right now. How many heavyweights were rated as highly as Wilder for so long by Ring despite never holding the Ring heavyweight title? Amazing.
Probably says more about the current crop of Heavyweight's and their standard of opposition, more than anything else.
LOL. Yes, because the division was so LOADED in late 1972 and early 1973 with Joe "King" Roman and Jose Luis Garcia in the top 10, and Jerry Quarry not even sniffing it. Wilder was rated in the top 2 in 2016, when the division boasted Wilder, Wlad, Fury, Joshua, Povetkin, Ortiz, Whyte, Parker and Haye ... and he's in the top 2 now in 2021 with Wilder, Fury, Joshua, Usyk, Whyte, Ortiz, Parker, Ruiz and Povetkin ... and all of them have held titles. Although Usyk's was at cruiserweight, but he held them all. The lowest Wilder ever fell in the last five years was #3. LOL. Not a Chuck Wepner or Larry Middleton in sight.
Shame that Jerry and Joe Bugner never got it on. There was a brief window circa 1973-74 when these two were the best of the rest behind the Big 4 of Ali,Foreman,Frazier & Norton.
I do believe Bugner was not aggressive enough to ever beat Quarry , Quarry only lost to hall of famers, only lost on cuts to hall of famers, Jimmy Quarry told me Jerry and Joe Bugner sparred, and Bugner never got off the ropes, and it was not a rope a dope tactic, Quarry is like 13-5 vs Joe's opponents, and Bugner 6-7 vs Jerry's!
Actually, Jerry Quarry lost to Eddie Machen, Jimmy Ellis, George Chuvalo and Ron Cranmer. None of them are in the Hall of Fame in Cansastota. Deontay Wilder has only lost to Tyson Fury.
By in the top two, do you mean number 2 contender. Because Fury and AJ are both rated ahead of him right now.
Said this a few times man, with boxing it's peaks and troughs for me. Interest wains, focus on modern rathen than classic, focus on classic rather than modern etc. But right now, a good few undisputed fights seem to be occurring, big fights seem to be happening more regularly, happy being a casual fan of the current scene right now tbh. Classic ain't going anywhere, in a few months when I return, it'll be here waiting.
You’re damn right it was loaded. You pointed out the lowest two contenders but fail to mention Frazier, Ali, Foreman, Norton, Terrell, Lyle, Patterson… am I missing anyone? I know which era will be remembered “till this day”. The one where they all fought each other.
No, actually Roman was rated seventh. Quarry not at all. And everyone is fighting everyone in this era. Fury fought Wlad and will Wilder again (three times). Joshua fought Parker, Whyte, Povetkin, Wlad and Ruiz (twice). Wilder has faced Ortiz twice and will fight Fury three times. Ruiz fought Joshua twice and Parker. Parker fought Joshua, Ruiz and Whyte. Whyte fought Joshua, Parker and Povetkin (twice). Wlad fought Povetkin, Fury and Joshua. It isn't like everyone fought everyone back then. Of those you mentioned, how many times did Norton and Frazier fight? Norton and Ellis? Norton and Lyle? Frazier and Lyle? How about Frazier vs. Patterson? Frazier-Terrell? Foreman-Quarry? Foreman-Ellis? It is no different now. Wlad, Fury, Joshua, Wilder, Usyk will all be Hall of Famers.
I meant lowest in terms of ability. Probably poorly worded on my behalf. If you honestly think today's crop matches up with the 70s crop, happy days. I certainly don't agree, but each to their own.
