Prime for prime. This one would definitely go to the judges' cards. I reckon that Young would have his hand raised, but it would be close. Thoughts ?
I'd have to go with Jimmy Young in this one..Young was cleverer than Jimmy Ellis, even though he deidn't hit as hard..nevertheless, that would prove to be irrelevant as Young would have taken the counterpuncher card away from Quarry and would have slipped and slided from Jerry inside..and landed many counters to the body as well as the head. It would have been a frustrating eveing for Jerry, like trying to nail jello to the wall with a guy who practided the art of "negative" better than anyone. Young would have been unlike most all of Quarry's opponents, in that he would not have been "trying to win"...just to survive and make Jerry look real bad in doing so, and almost incidently, would have won on points over 12 rounds. Jimmy would have made it look as though Jerry was having an off night without that necessarily being the case.
Very good assessment. I can see it unfolding in a similar way,Cobra. Still think that Jerry would make it a tough fight for Young, though.
Oh yeah..your're right about that..but this fight would have been lost out of frustration and Young's cleverness..he wouldn't have felt a punch probably..and Young wouldn't have even had to lay any hurt on Jerry. ..a bad match for Jerry. Quarry would have tried and maybe it would have been close but the style of Young would have been wrong for Irish Jerry.
Jerry's best chance would be to go inside to the body. I see Jimmy retreating behind his double jab and keeping it at range as he largely did with Foreman, and that's where he takes the decision.
