Yep, just don't give him credit enough to beat a fighter as good as jerry Quarry!

The smart money would be on Quarry for sure, but LaStartza might have a spoilers chance.

My post was about the men's credentials leading up to getting title fights.

Shavers, Lyle, Foster, and Middleton were long after Quarry had challenged for the title. A disputed decision over Patterson and the Spencer fight were more or less what got him a title shot.

LaStarza got to the title by beating Layne, who was the #2 contender and had beaten Walcott and Charles, and beating Bucceroni, who was the #3 contender in 1953, rated highly not only for beating LaStarza, but also Harrison, Slade, and Rocky Jones.

Now my position is both deserved their shots, but their actual credentials were similar. Quarry just did a ton better AFTER his failed championship fights.

And you apparently missed it, but I twice posted that I pick Quarry in this fight.

What most separates you and me is your high opinion of Quarry. I don't see him as that exceptional. He did not give Frazier or Ali particularly tough fights. Norton, Ellis, Chuvalo, and Machen beat him. I don't see him handling Foreman, Liston, or Terrell. I put Bonavena above him. So if you judge the 1965 to 1974 decade, I think Quarry comes out about 9th or below. Perhaps LaStarza wouldn't do as well in the 1946 to 1955 decade, but Quarry is hardly a super-contender either.

This all reads like bad fiction.

Why not just report this Jimmy White to the police and the NYSAC?

And if Jones didn't want to do that, why not just refuse to fight? After all, Jones had already banked a victory over LaStarza. The re-match wasn't something he needed. LaStarza needed it.

And who exactly forced Jones to "cool it" after a few rounds? This is a critical point. And if someone "suggested" it, why did Jones do it? What exactly could they do after Jones had won the fight? Take Jones for a ride? They care that much about LaStarza's career, especially as the authorities would know who made the threat and therefore whom to charge with the murder? And an ambitious DA wouldn't be hot to stoke his political career by sending some gangsters to the chair for killing a boxer who refused to throw a fight?

As for the film evidence, show it. I will be happy to watch and make up my own mind.

"LaStarza NEVER fought a dangerous opponent."

How can one view a fighter like Rex Layne who has beaten Walcott and Charles, as well as Satterfield, as not dangerous? Layne came out of 1952 rated the #2 contender behind Walcott and ahead of Charles.

And by the way, if the IBC was trying to knock LaStarza off, as is implied once, who exactly was threatening Jones? The IBC seems rather schizoid, as I've always heard the IBC was actually fronting for the mob.

In Lastarza's defence, he gave the up and coming best heavyweight of the era (assuming the late 40s Koe Louis falls a little short of Rocky) as good as he got. The same cannot be said about Quarry regardless of what you think about either of their resume's.

In actual fact I think Quarry's resume is pretty average, it's better than Lastarza's but I don't see anything in there to believe he should be held on any kind of pedestal when comparing him to other contenders from other eras..... Oh wait I forgot he fought in the same era as Ali and there's tonnes of footage of him, go figure.

Someone like Fireman Jim Flynn has a better winning resume than both of them and as far as my knowledge can take me, he was no better than a top 10 fighter at any stage of his career

    1. Marciano was still green when he took on lastarza the first time in early 1950. Despite his impressive record, Marciano was still a work in progress, having not started working with Goldman until just a year prior. Lastarza started directly in 1953 after their rematch “Marciano improved 5000 percent”. Lastarza was the first non ham n egger rocky took on.

    2. Lastarza fought Marciano directly after the vingo tragedy. Rocky may have been a bit gun shy in there.

Could quarry have given a 1950 marciano a difficult fight? Absolutely!

It should be noted quarry had the balls to take on the big dangerous punchers of the 70s everyone feared like Lyle and Shavers . Quite the opposite of Lastarza who hid behind his overprotective manager and ducked most of the best of the era

When you watch film of Cesar Brion giving Charles all he could handle in 1952 (after Cesar already lost to Lastarza) then it seems sensible to assume Roland could not have been that far away from Charles. Roland beat Brion too.

Brion was a rough tough handful. Nobody knocked him out and he gave everyone a run for their money. Only good fighters beat him. Roland was one of them. Lastarza beat Brion when the Argentine was 25-2 and coming off great knockout wins over 82-12 Tami Mauriello and 46-4 Bernie Reynolds.

If Roland was protected why did he fight Brion and Marciano in back to back fights??

Everyone and their mother beat brion. He was the whipping boy for 1950s top contenders

And Lastarza struggled plenty to beat brion according to New York Times. A dreadful affair and very close fight!

That 3 Minute clip proves nothing! I HAVE film of 14-9 club fighter rocky Jones beating the **** out of Lastarza.

Do you have the entire Charles brion fight? Charles wins a near shutout decision

How is lastara close to Charles level? Who did lastara defeat whose anywhere near Charles class as a boxer?

Quarry beat shavers and Lyle. How many rounds does Lastarza last vs either of these men?

Brion was Goldman's charge he was seen as a second stringer.
If Lastarza wasn't protected, how come he missed so many contenders?

I have no faith in your scoring. You scored Cleveland Williams beating Ernie Terrell, a close but not difficult fight to pick the winner. On a thread discussing the scoring of that fight you were the only guy who saw it that way.

If you have the full film of the Charles vs Brion fight put it on YouTube. I’m sure we would all love to see it.
