Marciano is all wrong for Quarry. Rocky would bust up that paper-thin skin and turn Quarry's mug into a crmson mask. Marciano by corner stoppage in about 5 rounds. Leon Spinks had no fear and was a tough customer. But he did not have any particular skill set that is going to really bother Quarry. Quarry, for once would also not be at a size and weight disadvantage. Quarry by kayo in eight rounds. Michael Spinks would be a way more difficult proposition for Quarry. The herky jerky movements and good jab would give Quarry fits. Quarry is not the puncher that Tyson was nor the boxer Holmes was. M. Spinks by majority decision in an ugly fight. Schmelling is truly a pick-em fight for me against Quarry. He could end up cutting Quarry up with pinpoint right crosses or Quarry could have success counterpunching the German. For me, the sharper, more focused and in-shape Quarry of the late 1960's to around 1970 when he beat Mac Foster takes Schmelling by decision or late kayo. The heavier, less-conditioned, high life living 1970's Quarry could be defeated on cuts by Schmelling. The ONLY time Quarry might have a shot to win against Liston would have been from 1967 on when Quarry was up and coming and Liston was aging and on the down side of career. At his best Liston's incredible jab and underated boxing skills, coupled with legendary power would just be too much. Liston by mid-round TKO on cuts. I have heard all the talk about how Quarry could have beaten Foreman, etc. However, Quarry never defeated a truly great heavyweight much less one at his physical peak as Foreman was circa 1973 or 74.' Foreman batters a game Quarry to a 6th round tko.
Yes, Liston's ridiculous jab would leave Quarry out of range to counter for much of the fight and if Jerry can't counter then Jerry can't win... Marciano, however, is a different story...While I do see a very late TKO for Marciano as a possible outcome, I can realistically see Quarry outboxing Marciano over 15 rounds to win a SD. The bottomline is that Quarry is by far the superior boxer and , believe it or not, he would be able to take Rock's punches without flinching(Please reference Quarry-Foster and Quarry-Shavers) and fire back. Remember that Frazier is busier and a MUCH cleaner, sharper puncher than Marciano so using Quarry's fight with Frazier to analyze a matchup with The Rock is unwise. The issue with Jerry is that you never really knew which version was going to show up but the Jerry Quarry who beat the **** out of Patterson and Buster Mathis would be a handful for Marciano.
We do know what version of Marciano showed up everytime so there is no need to make excuses. The one that went 49-0. What does it mean that Frazier was a cleaner, sharper puncher than Marciano? This is over thinking and complicating things. Let's make it simple. Marciano was a more devastating puncher than Frazier. You are entitled to your opinion but I'm sad to inform you that you would be sadly mistaken. Being a fan of Quarry I sure as hell would not want to see what he would look like after a 15-round fight with Marciano. He would not even make it close to 15 rounds thank god. That fight would be either stopped or I would have reason to fear for Quarry's life. Quarry was one of the toughest men to ever grace the squared circle and that was sometimes his undoing. Either he gets kayoed or the ref haults the slaughter for his own good. If Walcott could not succeed in outboxing the Rock for the full 15-round distance then how the heck is Quarry going to?! Charles and Walcott were both better than Quarry and they couldn't beat Marciano. Quarry would have had even less success and been handily beaten when Marciano's relentless pressure starts to wear him down.
Mac Foster? You are comparing him to Marciano? Yes, Shavers could match Marciano's power but, as we all well know, was no where near the fighter Marciano was. Marciano had better stamina, a better chin, a better, more complex arsenal, threw more punches than Earnie did.
Like I said, I DON'T need to learn anything from you and I highly doubt that I could learn anything from you, especially considering your argumentative responses. I've spoken to George Chuvalo numerous times, met Gil Clancy and discussed the sparring sessions at that time. Saddler called off the sparring sessions with Quarry because George was getting embarrased and took some heavy shots. This session happened when Quarry was preparing to fight Frazier and George wasn't even a pro yet, hence when I said a "green" George Foreman. You do have enthusiasm Norton, you should just tone it down a bit and avoid "posting" down to people. I don't need to insult anyone to make a point. All this namecalling on this forum is worse middle school crap that doesn't belong.
If you look at most of the men who Frazier defeated, a lot of them fell into the same size category as Marciano's. Jimmy Ellis was a former middle weight. Jerry Quarry rarely weighed over 195 lbs, or at least not when he was at his best. Oscar Bonavena, George Chuvalo and a number of others were not exactly large heavy weights either. Buster Mathis was a big man, but not in very good shape nor very good. Ali was a large heavy weight for the standards of the day, but then Frazier wasn't able to stop him so the punching argument doesn't apply. Marciano had the highest KO percentage of all time, fought similar opponents, and unlike Joe, had a few one punch KO's - I don't know if Joe ever did..
Since when did he beat the **** out of patterson? I scored the first fight for Floyd on my card. Floyd was a bit past his prime here too.
Rocky Marciano - was this 1 of the fighters Quarry said were 'primitive' and he'd beat or was that just Dempsey? Rocky largely dominates this 1 Leon and Michael Spinks - defo beats Leon, Michael may beat him, thats a toss up Max Schmelling - 50-50 Sonny Liston - Sonny dominates George Foreman - Foreman dominates
Yeah, I don't normally follow the herd, but I think I'll make an exception on just this one occasion..
Ill lean towards Michael over Quarry by decision he might put on a boxing clinic though id give Quarry a punchers chance Quarry over PrimeLeon in a good fight while it last Quarry Ko 6 Quarry stops Schmeling in the mid rounds after even matched fight Marciano-Quarry is a close fight but ill go with the Rock. Liston - Quarry would be real good and highly competetive for a few rounds but Liston starts to bust Jerry up and his huge shots take a toll style wise Liston would be too much and has too much of everything for JQ Liston Ko7 Foreman-Quarry similar to Liston but ends quicker Foreman ko 4
how do you ignore? this idiot has no reasoning whatsoever and has brought colour into this thread twice already
Chuvalo was a big dude compared to anyone Marciano fought that's for dure...Bottom line is Frazier was the more dangerous puncher overall because was a clinical pressure fighter who's punches were much, MUCH cleaner and sharper. What does this mean? This means that Frazier's power punches are far more likely to land on a talented, seasoned boxer like Quarry. Yes, Marciano had one-punch KO power but do you realistically see Marciano landing at will against a prime '68-70 Quarry? I don't... Rocky is far too sloppy on both ends to trouble Jerry as much as many believe...Watch some film on Quarry against Patterson, Ellis, Chuvalo(not the best example), Foster, Lyle and Shavers and tell me...:huh
