You have made some good points about George and his stamina. Few of his early bouts went far so the first go with Peralta stands out as he was exhausted for the last two rounds and this view of him stayed. Ali did have some luck going for him indeed with the very loose ropes taking some weight off what George landed on him, and he did say he saw snakes and skeleton's from a few of the punches. George though did not know what to do other then hammer on him and Ali could take it, thats not luck but ability and Ali's here was the greater.

One last point about the Young bout and its that this wasn't the same George who earlier would have beat him,,,,,Gil messed up badly wanting to shorten George's hooks so he had George shorten his stance and put his feet closer together,,,,way wrong! It was those two things that had let George put so much weight and balance into his punches and it was now gone, if you watch his picture perfect right uppercut ala the Frazier bout was now going sideways with only arm strength in it. His jab was now also only arm as he couldn't walk into anymore ala the Norton bout. Even when he almost had Jimmy out his legs are almost tangled and ill placed because of Gil's bad experiment.

 

Son of Gaul, good post on Jerry. One reason I have to put Rocky up over Jerry is the first and second Frazier go's. In both Jerry simply was battered down, it was like muscle against steel starting in the third round of both bouts with Jerry left at the end with little power in his punches and just getting beat. Rocky was rock hard like Joe and his punches on Jerry's arms, body, anywhere would batter him down as Joe did.

 

Good points but I really don't think that Marciano could do to Jerry what Frazier did to him. Yes, they were both ATG pressure fighters and both had ATG stamina but that's where the comparison ends. Frazier had an extensive amateur background which made him a more clinical pressure fighter( more accurate puncher, better footwork and more accurate powerpuncher). Marciano was stronger physically and probably had the better chin but his punches were as slow as molasses and far too inaccurate to trouble a counter puncher with '67-'69 Jerry Quarry's pedigree. I think the most likely scerio has Quarry peppering Marciano with counters for most of a 12 or 15rd fight where he wins by decision 5-6 times out of 10.

 

I can't remember how many times I have asked you what fighters your talking about, the ones who stood up to Liston and he then lost? We know it wasn't the bigger Williams who stood up to Sonny and then got battered down, the first Ali bout was about even at the stoppage so its not that,,,,,,if your going to keep repeating yourself just what is your documentation? You have a reputation now of putting down others boxing knowledge, so what is your answer?

 

Yeah for the first few rounds quarry might build a small lead but Liston would come back and knock him out.

 

He might beat Leon Spinks, that's about it. He gives all of them at least a few problems but comes up short more times than not.

 

The Marciano fight would be competitive early but Marciano would wear him down for a TKO or RSF in about the 6th rd. A lot of people dont give Rocky credit for his quick release of odd-ball power shots. Rocky was not a speedy combo puncher because he was not a textbook combo puncher. Rocky had a quick release with his right and double left hook

I like Quarry over Leon by KO and Michael but Michael may survive the distance.

I think Quarry had the right style to beat Foreman because of his solid chin and power in both hands. Jerry had a solid chin and went to the body and head well and the young George had poor stamina, recipe of disaster vs Quarry. I always felt he may be the right style to beat George but this was the mature version of Quarry who dominated,Lyle,Foster and Shavers

Liston had the jab and good stamina, he was slow but I think he takes the nod over Jerry but not without some scary moments and it could also be a fight Jerry wins because Jerry excelled vs the big strong, slow guys. Tough pick because I can see this going both ways.
