Some times I say things like " He'll take him in 8" or something when I'm really just trying to spark a debate. This is an interesting one though...?
Moorer could be so...you know. Spacey. Sometimes. But he's an underrated skill and he's a genuine puncher. I don't think Quarry gets out of this one. But if he does, he'll probably be a mess and drop a decision. That's if Moorer shows up and stays there the whole time without Teddy sitting on his stool and causing a scene. It might turn out to be pretty interesting thought for four or five rounds.
If Moorer could have taken the weight of a Heavyweight punch better he'd have been a force to be reckoned with. The way he would shorten up his shots on the inside and still deliver with power was quite extraordinary. Moorer could stop Quarry, but Quarry could very well stop Moorer. A very entertaining fight for as long as it lasts.
As long as Moorer remains focused and boxes Quarry from long-range, I see Moorer putting on a show against Quarry..... Moorer's chin was shaky, but his skills were very good.... Moorer at a good weight of 214 pounds hammers Quarry at 200 pounds in a time machine....... Quarry game, but out-classed........ MR.BILL
Hello, MR.BILL. Is it not correct that Michael Moorer often found it hard to keep focused without that bloody Atlas shouting from the traps?
YES! But I'll say that while Moorer was a "Head" case, he had great skills... But the lazy ******* never could maintain a serious fighting weight as a heavyweight........ I feel his weight of 214 against Holy in Vegas back in 1994 was Moorer's best weight as a heavy.... I visited with both "Moorer and Holy" in Vegas prior to the fight of April 1994........ Ironically, Holy too was at 214 pounds come the weigh-in...... Physically, 214 was Moorer's weight..... Then came the 'Foreman' fight later in 1994, Moorer comes in at 222 pounds...... WTF? MR.BILL:hat
You know, I think sometimes Michael had a similarity with Lennox Lewis. They'd both feel so in control and cocky that they felt like they were winning when they were really in lala land giving away rounds. Then somebody would stun them a bit and they'd go "What the hell do you think you're doing? Didn't you get the memo about me being in control here?"
Quarry KOs Moorer. Quarry's skills matched up very good w/ Moorer's. Both could punch, Quarry cut a lot easier and Moorer had much weaker chin. Both could be "head cases". I think Quarry was a tougher man.
Jerry hit hard enough to take Moorer out of there Jerry by Stop, unless Michael goes into survival mode but I favor Quarry by a stop over Moorer at any weight
It would be interesting to see how Quarry did against a truly natural and gifted south paw like more, and more specifically, one that fought in an era of larger men. Quarry dealt with his fair share of big punchers, ie. Shavers, Lyle, Foster, etc... I don't know what he'd do against a man like Moorer though... Different type of a fight.. I also think that Moorer's chin is too easily written off as being made of glass. He was only stopped on 3 occasions in close to 50 pro fights, two of which came against big punchers and one was when he was past it.. People also forget that he took some big shots from Bert Cooper, Alex Stewart, James Smith, Evander Holyfield and even Foreman, before going down in the 10th.. I'd hardly call this being "chinny" or at least not in the purest sense of the term.. My thinking is that with Quarry's tendency to cut and bleed, as well as having more success against mostly one-dimensional hitters, he might be over his head here. I can't see Jerry doing to Michael what David Tua did to him, and certainly not if this was a prime for prime match-up, which the Tua fight wasn't.
Quarry's forte was fighting the Big Slower so called power punchers. I was young and loved the 24-0 24 ko record of Big Mac Foster and the Sonny Liston Prison darkness of Ron lyle and Earnie was on a big build up...I also saw him get dropped by a wicked shot by Joe Alexander to get up and KO Joe. Jerry was not an elite puncher but carried Heavyweight power in either hand. Jerry was a natural puncher. His brother Mike was not. I think the power gets to Moorer at some point
