Jerry Quarry vs. Ernie Shavers, 1973

Quarry had balls the size of Everest in this fight....Clancy was screaming "box him...box him", but **** no,..Jerry wanted that ko, lol..

 

Jerry Quarry could fight. Quick hands, a good solid body puncher. That hook to the body was his bread and butter. He was tough as hell sometimes too tough for his own good.

Quarry was always willing to rumble with the best. He couldve probably avoided some fighters but he took the tough road.

 

This was the fight that supposedly was to give Jerry a shot at Foreman in September if he won.

However, Foreman "admittedly" sidestepped Jerry to fight Ali instead.

They made Jerry fight Frazier instead (whom Jerry could never had beaten due to styles).

 

Savage beating. I think Quarry would have beaten him every time due to the better chin.

 

Professional num-skulls are basically the announcers of today.

Damn. If Ron Stander beat Shavers what chance would Ernie have had against Smoking Joe?

 

Jerry Quarry was as game as they come. Good set of mitts too when he was in the mood as we can see. Shavers ate some serious leather there. He must be turning in his grave when he sees some of the guys winning these alphabet titles

 

I think Shavers would have been a very dangerous man for Frazier to fight. Styles. Still, Frazier would be the favorite, but not by much in my book.

 

Very few people in any profession have pensions when they retire in their 30s, as most boxers do.

I'd reckon Ron Stander made not much more than $100,000 in his entire career. He retired at age 38 and wasn't really fighting regular the last two years. He was free to put money away or set up a retirement fund that could have drawn interest and chose not to do so. How much do you figure he should get a month, and starting at what age? Used car salesmen don't get pensions either, nor do construction workers or a lot of other people in a lot of fields.

Ron was free to start a career in another field at any point, either during his boxing years or at age 39.

I'm 48 years old. If I had decided to stop working 10 years ago, I wouldn't expect to have banked much by way of a pension to draw upon.

I don't think Don King gets a pension unless it's from money he put away. Managers don't get pensions either.

Boxers know all this and choose to fight. If their concern is a good retirement plan, they can start putting away money in their youth, forego the boxing career and get in the workforce at an earlier age or start a career outside the ring when they hang up the gloves.
