    The Skinny
Jerry Quarry needs a victory, to guarantee him a rematch with
Heavyweight Champion Joe Frazier, which has been proposed for
    early-1970.

Jerry who fought the Champion in June 1969, was stopped by TKO 7
in 'The Fight of the Year'. Since that loss, Jerry has won '2-straight'
(KO 1 - Johnny Carroll) in August, and (KO 2 -Brian London) in September.

George Chuvalo at age 32+, with his career in the final stages, wants
to make one more run at the Heavyweight Championship, and hopes and
needs an upset win to continue.

George, after losing a 'one-sided' 12-Round Decision to Buster Mathis
in February of this year, retired following that loss. But 7-months later
came back, and has scored 'two KO wins', (KO 2 - Stamford Harris) in
September, and (TKO 3 - Leslie Borden) in November.

I dispute the tale of the tape in that I think George should be listed as 6'-1" at least.

'Chuvalo's Ring Career Changes in One Second'

Canadian 'Iron Man' George Chuvalo saved his career last night with a
desperation punch, a hard left hook to the top of Jerry Quarry's head,
dropping the California Heavyweight late in Round 7.

The punch landed at the 2:49 Mark of the Round, and Quarry went down
on his backside. Jerry got up at the 3-Count, but went back to down and
then got to a squatting position as Referee - Zach Clayton began to
administer the mandatory 8-Count. Jerry then rose as Clayton reached the
10-Count, where the Referee waved off the fight at 2:59 of Round 7.

'Chuvalo's Left Hook Knocks Out Quarry'

Jerry Quarry lost his mental temper, and was counted out by Referee -
Zach Clayton in the 7th Round.

Quarry said he screamed that he couldn't hear the count from the noise
from the nearly 10,000 in attendance last night at Madison Square Garden.

Quarry who was floored by a Chuvalo left hook, after the California Heavyweight
had dominated the 7th-Round, had trouble hearing the count from Referee - Zach Clayton.

Jerry got up at the 3-Count, but went back down, as he said, to take
advantage of a full 8-Count. Unfortunately Jerry never picked up the
count from the Referee, who had no other choice to wave it off when
Jerry did not rise at the 10-Count.

Zach Clayton, 'I feel bad, but Jerry did not get up before I reached 10.
He spit out his mouthpiece, and looked like he wasn't sure whether to get
    up or stay down.'

Jerry Quarry reels from a George Chuvalo left hoook.

I've always been curious why a rematch was never made. You'd think Quarry would have wanted redemption.

Jerry Quarry was sent tumbling across the ring from a Chuvalo left hook,
where he was deposited on the canvas.

Jerry got up at the 3-Count, then went back down to a squatting
    position as Referee -Zach Clayton.

During the time squatting, Jerry did not make a move to get up. When
Zach Clayton reached '10', Jerry sprang up quickly.

Zach Clayton informed Jerry that the bout was over, which infuriated
Quarry, who screamed at the Referee.

Jerry Quarry, 'My knee was off the canvas, so I should have never been
counted out. I got up and was O.K. I have never been down before, so I was
a bit confused, I wasn't sure if I had to get up at the '9-Count' or '10-Count'.
    The Referee made a mistake.'

Zach Clayton, 'Tell me, what's the difference between 9 or 10. If he wanted
to get up, he would have. He stayed down and spit out his mouthpiece, then
when I got to '10' he sprang up.'

    'Chuvalo's Biggest Win'

One split-second stood between George Chuvalo and a 'loss' that might have
spelled the end of his career. But instead he wound up with his 'biggest' victory.
Chuvalo, with his right eye completely closed for most of the fight, and knowing
the fight would have been stopped between Rounds, fired a desperation left hook
from the 'rafters' of Madison Square Garden at 2:48 of Round 7.

Somehow, the left hook landed on Jerry Quarry, who then tumbled backawards and
onto the canvas. Jerry was quickly up at the 3-Count, and got to a squatting position
as Referee - Zach Clayton picked up the count. At the '9-Count', Quarry showed no
signs of moving as Zach Clayton reached '10', sending a roar of confusion from the
9915 in attendance at the famed arena.

Zach Clayton then 'waved it off' with only 1-second left in the round.

It was a bull**** stoppage. Jerry was hurt from the punch, but he was putting a thorough ass-whippin on Chuvalo the whole fight up until the knockdown.

Had he continued, the beating would have continued too. That fight irritates me.

    Red C,

Teddy Brenner (Boxing Matchmaker at Madison Square Garden) did
try to get them together again, but both fighters were reluctant to
go at each other again, plus both wanted more money the '2nd-time'
    around.

George wanted to 'forge ahead' and go after Joe Frazier one more time,
    before fighting Jerry again.

Jerry, more or less, was thrown in the 'scrap heap' for early-1970, and
many said he was already 'worn out' from too many tough fights, despite
being only 24 1/2 years old.

The Fight (New York Daily News)

    Round 1

The 201 lb. Jerry Quarry went to boxing over the first 1:00, and was
faster than the 217 lb. plodder Chuvalo, by punching and moving backwards.

Quarry landed a good one-two at 1:27, and followed with a good left hook
at 1:31. 'Two' more good left hooks at 1:40 and 1:42 were scoring punches.

Chuvalo then retaliated by 'bulling' Quarry, and held him with his left arm while
whacking away with hard rights to the Quarrys' left side.

Quarry came back with a good right hand at 1:52. Quarry was landing the cleaner
punches, but Chuvalo was starting to get rough, by holding and hitting at the 2:10 Mark.

Quarry landed another good left hook at 2:48, and followed with a sharp right hand at 2:51.
Chuvalo then 'bulled' Quarry into a neutral corner, and both boys whaled away for the
    last 7-seconds.

There was a 'fierce' exchange at the bell, with both fighters landing good left hooks to
    each others chin.

It was an good and exciting round. (Round 1 for Jerry Quarry)

    Round 2

Jerry moved well for the first 30-seconds, and looked to be trying to set-up a hard counter.
At the 0:38 Mark Jerry landed a good right hand, and 10-seconds later landed a good left hook
    underneath at the 0:48 Mark.

Chuval again got rough, and backed Quarry up, by holding and hitting again at the 1:00 Mark.

Chuvao landed his best punch so far at the 1:18 Mark with a good left hand to Jerry's chin.
Chuvalo continued to 'bull forward' over the next 40-seconds, as Quarry was getting out-muscled.

George landed a good left hook to the body at the 2:07 Mark, and backed that up with '3' good
left jabs to Jerry's right eye, which caused a minor swelling under the eye.

Quarry came back with a good left hand, but Chuvalo was quick to counter with a '3-punch' combination
    to the body.

Quarry landed a good left hand late in the round, and Chuvalo fired back with a decent one-two at the bell.

    Round 3

In between Rounds, Jerry's cut-man Teddy Bendham was working on
his the swelling under his right-eye, and also a nick on the corner of the eye.

Jerry opens up by boxing, and does some good movement. At the 0:40 mark,
Jerry jumps in with a sharp one-two, and backs away to box from outside.

At the 1:15 Mark, Chuvalo lands '3' light left hooks, which are below
Jerry's belt-line. Chuvalo is wanred to 'keep them up' by Referee -Zach Clayton.

Chuvalo lands '3' good jabs at the 1:46 Mark, and neutralize's Jerry with
    a good '3-punch' combination at 2:01.

Jerry comes back with hard left hook way below the belt-line, which
causes Chuvalo to turn away at the 2:09 Mark.

Chuvalo moves forward, and lands a big left hook to Jerry's jaw at the
2:25 Mark, which wobbles him for half-a-second.

Jerry is OK, and shoots back with a good one-two at the 2:34 Mark.
After that exchange, both fighters cruise until the bell.

The fight Quarry fans either don't wanna talk about or they discredit it for whatever reason. Chuvalo won, get over it.
