Quarry vs C00mey...the two recent "Great White Hopes".

C00mey, much bigger, with huge left hook.

But Quarry, a great counter puncher, with enough power to
    hurt C00mey's questionable jaw.

    Who wins?

Quarry was a much more complete fighter and would beat Cooney, imo. We should consider that Cooney was a novice compared to Quarry. He was protected, and though it did help health wise, as well as financially, he never learned the many facets of boxing as a result. He did have a wicked left hook/uppercut, but not much else.

Cooney at his best cuts up Quarry and stops him within five rounds.

That's what I see. Busting him up long before Jerry can build the foundation for him getting to GC. And Quarry is going to walk in to those nasty left uppercuts & opponents need to take that punch away or at least nullify it.

This is a reallllllly tough fight to pick and I would be on pins and needles watching it. Cooney had the better jab, with ripping results. They both possessed killer left hooks and left hooks to the body, but Cooney's was better. Not that that would mean anything in the grand scheme of things because Cooney would have to get close enough to land those and he did not possess Quarry's talent at counter-punching or Quarry's resilience at handling those shots. Man, this one would be something.

Another vote for Quarry. Cooney hit harder, but, Quarry far superior in every other way.

Quarry was the better fighter in a lot of aspects. But he might have had some problems with the much larger and harder punching C00ney.

Cooney did not have near Quarry's experience or expertise, A 1969-73 Quarry beats a 1980-82 Cooney. Cooney looked devastating against unrated fighter's . I also consider a 1973 Ron Lyle much stronger , than the one Cooney defeated. Gerry might have beat Jerry with his size and reach, yet I cannot see him doing it too a "prime Quarry!" who was not only west coast boxing smart, And had some devastating power in his own right.

In order for Quarry's experience to prevail he'd have to outbox Gerry over the long haul as I can't see him ending it early as he did with Shavers. Along the way he will no doubt take some very hard shots that could end things at any given point.

The only quarry I can see cooney beating is the washed up one back end. A prime quarry wins.. But a really tough fight. Can see quarry in the eye of the hurricane in the first few rounds. Cooney will be throwing some mean stuff at Jerry and he'll be seriously rocked. It's all cooney in at least the first 5rounds. Can see Jerry countering well in second half, come round s 6 and 7 its all Jerry. While cooney still dangerous he's losing steam and round, 8 quarry throws a multitude of solid hard punches and cooney is down!! He gets up at 8but ref takes one look at cooney eyes and waves it over!

Two recent great white hopes? Really? In case you haven't been watching, the heavyweight division has been dominated by white fighters for quite a while, not that it means anything. Back to the post: Quarry's chin, boxing skills and superior arsenal would win the day against the one-handed and not-so-solid chinned Cooney.
