Quarry at his best...not for instance, the version that got careless and decked by Joe Alexander....would be all over Cooney and would have stopped him.
Cooney was much stronger in power and a much better punch selection in the way he set it up.Quarry was basic come forward predictable guy much easier to hit and he cut easily. Cooney laid out Lyle and Norton despite them being past prime and gave Holmes all he could handle and could have beat Spinks had he fought smarter and years earlier. Cooney from the early 80's stops Quarry. the match itself would be a very tall guy vs a much shorter slower guy with less punching power who has the achilles heal to cut. Quarry is not a slick boxer like Holmes or spinks and is not going to present the dangers others have. Quarry fought much smaller guys who stood to trade with him able to counter and stay on them,he caught Shavers early ,but would he catch a 6'6 Cooney and would Cooney fold that quick? Cooney win by 6th round ref stoppage,i think he hits Quarry from the distance like ali and slowly busts Gerry up.
This is the best assessment thus far put forth. Quarry beats Cooney on legacy but that's not necessarily how it will play out in the actual ring.
I have to go with C00ney. Quarry was the better fighter and accomplished more. But the C00ney that went through Norton, Lyle and Young and then gave a prime Holmes a very tough fight has the style advantage to me. Quarry doesn't have Holmes legs to keep moving and would be there to be hit by a very Big Puncher. Post Holmes I would take Quarry not before that.
This would be a very competitive fight. I could see Quarry with his boxing skills weathering the early storm and coming back late to win a decision or maybe even get a stoppage. Anything short from a prime Quarry gets stopped by Cooney though.
