jerry quarry vs gerry cooney.....

I think Quarry would be too much for Cooney..a stoppage within the first 4 rounds would be my guess. A tko after a couple of knockdowns.

 

Although Quarry is the better legacy fighter, I think both the physical and stylistic differences of these two men are in Cooney's favor. Neither man was particularly durable, but at least Cooney went 13 rounds with a peak Holmes. Quarry was stopped early against most of the elite group that he stepped up to. Cooney would have towered over quarry with a 6 inch height advantage along with an additional 25-30 lbs in weight. Lastly, he was a very fast starter with a ton of power and a danagersous left hook. I don't see Quarry making it out of the early rounds frankly.

 

Quarry by TKO somewhere around the 8th.

 

There were TWO versions of Gerry Cooney. The first incarnation was the pre-Holmes version who devasted everyone. This one would have beaten a game Quarry. However the second version was post-Holmes. Moody, depressed, unfocused and inactive. The consistent Quarry would have chopped Cooney down in a similar fashion of Micheal Spinks.

 

Quarry all day long.

 

A fair and reasonable assessment.

 

Quarry may get stopped from cuts anytime in this fight. Past the mid rounds, Quarry wears down Cooney.

 

I like this analysis. But I don't think Quarry would have been quite as dominant against Cooney as Spinks was.

 

I know where my money would go.

With the more proven Quarry.

 

Possibly.

But, on a side note, I don't think Cooney was capable of beating very many of the top 10 heavyweights in 1987, if any at all. He was fighting on average maybe once every 18 months since the Holmes loss, against mainly unranked, mediocre opposition. He was known for having both drug and alcohol problems, and had spent much of the previous 5 years doing little in the way of productivity. Come fight night, he showed up at a career high 238 lbs, and never showed a lick of interest.


Cooney was finished...

 

Cooney will always be an unknown to be honest.

He verry obviously fell very far short of what he could have been.

Larry Holmes thought that he would go on to a respectable career following their fight and lost money betting on him repeatedly.

 

jerry quarry is one of the toughest heavyweight that i have ever seen. he took absolute beatings and hung in as long as he could even in very very little hope fights. courage deffinetely on par with frazier and ali although they where both too fast and maybe too strong for him.

id go with quarry to take cooneys hook all fight long and stop him.

 

It would be cooneys fight to win or lose. If he fought from long range and used his jab he'd bust quarry up and stop him. If he chose not to use his great physical advantages and slug it out, even though he could still win he gives quarry an opportunity to connect and knock him out.
